The Carolina Panthers aren’t paying Cam Newton what they’re paying him—(at least $6 million for the rest of the season) not to start. So if he’s close, especially with the team sitting at .500 and in need of a push, he’s going to be up.
That was the feel from head coach Matt Rhule on Wednesday, who once again indicated that Newton will be his starting quarterback as soon as humanly possible. How about Sunday?
“I think we’re probably trending that way, to be quite honest with you,” Rhule said when asked if Newton is in line to start against the Washington Football Team in Week 11. “I’m not gonna pull that trigger until later. I think I was pretty transparent the other day, in terms of we’re wanting to push him into that role. I think it’s good for our team. We’re getting P.J. [Walker] ready as well. I think game plan wise, we could see a myriad of things happen.”
Walker got the nod in this past weekend’s 34-10 victory against the Arizona Cardinals. He completed 22 of his 29 passes for 167 yards and an interception.
Newton, just three days after he officially signed on, was sprinkled in over nine snaps. A small serving of Cam resulted in the Panthers’ first two touchdowns of the afternoon, helping kickstart their massive upset win.
The serving this Sunday, however, will seemingly be much more of a heaping one.
