Panthers rookie scouting report: Chuba Hubbard fits perfect behind Christian McCaffrey

Hubbard is a great answer even if some might think he was a reach in the fourth round.

The Panthers have long said they would like to add a backup running back that fits the same mold as Christian McCaffrey. Hubbard is a great answer even if some might think he was a reach in the fourth round. There is no questioning his production after tallying 3,459 rushing yards, 33 rushing touchdowns, and an average of 5.9 yards per carry in just 33 collegiate games. Hubbard ran wild in Oklahoma State’s spread-like offense and flashed so many quality traits that can translate to success in the NFL.

For starters, Hubbard checks all the physical and athletic traits as he is an excellent athlete and has a tremendous frame that is dense and able to absorb contact without much problem. He has sufficient long range speed and shows good burst in and out of his cuts. He also shows excellent patience waiting for his blocks to open up, superb contact balance, and quality vision. He shows the same patient, one-cut running style as McCaffrey when you turn on the tape and compare the two.

Hubbard also catches the ball well out of the backfield and has promising route-running ability. Also like McCaffrey, Hubbard is dangerous after the catch and can take a simple screen or swing pass to the house. He caught 53 passes for 479 yards and three touchdowns in college.

It might have been a slight reach value-wise, but the Panthers have solved their backup running back problem for years to come and they’ll be able to keep McCaffrey fresh the whole season.
