One of the most pleasant surprises for the Carolina Panthers this year has been the decisive running style of backup running back Mike Davis. With the team’s All-Pro starter Christian McCaffrey missing nine games due to ankle and shoulder injuries, Davis has stepped up and exceeded even our wildest expectations.
Despite splitting carries with both Trenton Cannon and Rodney Smith, in Sunday’s loss to the Vikings Davis posted 79 more yards from scrimmage, bringing his season total to 833. Aside from Jeremy Chinn’s stunning consecutive defensive touchdowns, our favorite play of the day came when Davis trucked over Vikings rookie defensive end D.J. Wonnum. Yesterday, Davis joked that he hopes he doesn’t get fined for it.

Davis is set to become a free agent after this season. Even though McCaffrey takes up a lot of oxygen at this position, it’s worth keeping No. 28 around if the Panthers can afford it. Odds are he’ll be able to cash in with another team, though.
