Panthers QB Sam Darnold is a 3-time reigning champion in this stat

For the past three seasons, Panthers QB Sam Darnold has “led” the NFL in this stat.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold doesn’t lead the NFL in, well, anything. But, if you dig deep enough, you’ll find he does stick out in something.

Warren Sharp of Sharp Football Analysis did that digging—and found out that when trailing, Darnold was the least efficient non-rookie quarterback (with at least 200 throws) in 2021. And in 2020. And in 2019.

Also, considering Darnold was a non-rookie starting in 2019—the first year of this three-season reign—he’s technically undefeated at this wonderfully unfortunate statistic. But should that come as a surprise?

Well, no. In addition to playing on some not-so-great teams, Darnold has done a poor job with ball security.

Between 2019 and 2021, the former third overall pick has coughed up 37 interceptions and 24 fumbles over 36 games. Additionally, he has only two fourth-quarter comebacks and three game-winning drives over that time—all of which came in the 2019 campaign.

Unfortunately for Darnold, the ball isn’t the only thing he’s had trouble securing. He may have a tough time holding on to his job in 2022, as the Panthers are still on the lookout for stability under center.

And if Carolina does ultimately replace Darnold, he may not get the chance for a four-peat at this startling bad efficiency.
