Panthers QB Sam Darnold discusses what he needs to improve on

Darnold still has to do a lot of improving himself, though.

Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold won’t be playing in tomorrow’s preseason opener against the Colts. He did get plenty of reps the last two days in joint practices, though.

Darnold has a much better supporting cast here in Carolina than he did during his time with the Jets. Specifically, a strong receiver corps, a superstar running back and a sharp young offensive coordinator should help him take his game to the next level. Darnold still has to do a lot of improving himself, though. Here’s what he said he needs to work on, according to Darin Gantt at the team website.

“For me personally, I just have to be quicker with my eyes, make better decisions. I think that’s just it. Being clearer with my reads, and if something’s not there, check it down. That’s me personally.”

It checks out. Darnold got into a bad habit of trying to do too much in New York, frequently trying to fit throws downfield into double coverage. While he has the arm talent to pull it off, he needs to learn when to take what the defense gives him and dramatically cut down on the mistakes.

In 38 career games, Darnold has thrown 39 interceptions and has 20 fumbles, as well.
