Forget the mentions of Drew Brees and Russell Wilson. The most popular comparison University of Alabama quarterback Bryce Young received throughout the draft process was to a basketball player—Steph Curry.
Now, as a Carolina Panthers quarterback, Young took the podium for his introductory press conference on Friday afternoon, just hours after being selected as this year’s No. 1 overall pick. When asked of Curry by Joe Person of The Athletic, the 21-year-old passer praised the Golden State Warriors guard/Charlotte guy/Panthers superfan.
“I hope so,” Young said on if he thinks he’ll hear from Curry soon. “I know Steph right now—he’s got a lot on his plate right now, too. Obviously, he’s focused and locked in on the playoff series he’s trying to win. But yeah, I’m well aware. Definitely have a tremendous amount of respect for him as a player and as a person. Someone I definitely look up to. And yeah, I’m well aware of him being a part of the fanbase, so it’s super cool.”
Curry, who grew up in Charlotte while his father played for the Hornets, is as Carolina faithful as they come. And it’s rather fitting that Young—who has been likened to the two-time NBA MVP and four-time champion for his relative size, distributing skills and playmaking ability—is now Curry’s quarterback.
Oh, and in case quarterbacks coach Josh McCown is busy, Bryce could have himself a pretty good HORSE partner nearby.
