Panthers place QB Sam Darnold on injured reserve

The Panthers have now made the expected move of placing QB Sam Darnold, who’s expected to miss the next four to six weeks, on the injured reserve.

We still probably haven’t seen the last of Sam Darnold in a Carolina Panthers uniform. But we may have seen the last of Sam Darnold in a Carolina Panthers uniform in 2021.

On Friday, the team made the expected decision to place the quarterback on the injured reserve. The fourth-year passer was diagnosed with a fracture of the scapula in his throwing shoulder on Tuesday.

Darnold’s trip to the shelf became a bit more apparent with a pair of additions by the Panthers at the quarterback position this week. In addition to bringing in nine-year veteran Matt Barkley on Monday, Carolina just signed some dude named Cam Newton.

The Panthers will likely tab backup P.J. Walker as the starter for their upcoming matchup against the 8-1 Arizona Cardinals. Barring a sudden start from Newton, who’s practicing for the first time with the team on Friday, Walker’s familiarity of the offense makes him the favorite under center for Week 10.

Carolina, additionally, released quarterback James Morgan from their practice squad while adding linebacker Josh Watson off the heels of the two aforementioned signings.
