Panthers HC candidate Jerod Mayo turns down Browns DC interview

As reported by Phil Perry of NBCS Boston, Patriots LB coach and Panthers HC candidate Jerod Mayo has turned down an interview request for the Browns’ DC job.

Welcome back to As the Jerod Mayo Turns.

On today’s episode, the popular coaching candidate turned down an interview with the Cleveland Browns for their defensive coordinator opening. Per Phil Perry of NBCS Boston, it’s a polite pass from Mayo—who probably has the bigger picture in mind.

The bigger picture involves at least two teams at the moment—his current employer in the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers.

On Thursday afternoon, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the latter may be interested in prying away the linebackers coach from the former—as Carolina requested an interview with the 36-year-old for their head coaching position. Soon after, the Patriots themselves asserted that they were in talks with Mayo for a long-extension, which could result in a promotion.

And as if that wasn’t a lot to consume in about a six-hour window, MMQB senior editor Albert Breer reported later that night that the interview between Mayo and Carolina has not been called off and the two sides still have mutual interest.

This latest nugget from Perry does, though, give us at least a little clarity into Mayo’s thinking. He’s going for the jackpot—whether that be in Carolina now or in New England somewhere down the line.
