Panthers GM Scott Fitterer: Brian Burns is ‘gonna be here’

Panthers GM Scott Fitterer doesn’t know when he’ll start negotiating a long-term extension with Brian Burns, but he seems confident that it will get done.

On March 20, Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer said he anticipates getting to work on an extension for Brian Burns after the draft. Well, it’s “after the draft.”

During the team’s post-draft presser on Saturday afternoon, Fitterer was asked if Burns’ ankle injury—one that required surgery a few weeks ago—would impact said extension. But that, like his long-term status in Charlotte, doesn’t seem to be a worry for the team.

“I don’t see that,” Fitterer told Joe Person of The Athletic. “We’ll get into it. Burns is gonna be here. He’s one of our leaders.”

That leader is coming off the most productive season of his four-year career. Burns—in notching his second straight Pro Bowl nod—racked up bests in sacks (12.5), combined tackles (63), tackles for a loss (17) and quarterback hits (22).

Fitterer, however, added that there isn’t a timeframe to get a deal done.

“There is no timeline. We’ll just start talks. I’ll just reach out to his agent and we’ll have those talks at some point.”
