Panthers’ Bryce Young, Diontae Johnson off to hot start at training camp

Panthers HC Dave Canales confirmed that there are big plans ahead for WR Diontae Johnson.

It already looks like the Carolina Panthers really do have some big plans for Diontae Johnson.

The team kicked off their 2024 edition of training camp on Wednesday, where the Pro Bowl wide receiver connected with quarterback Bryce Young for one of the outing’s most eye-opening plays.

Head coach Dave Canales was asked about the chemistry between the two after practice.

“I think it’s just, for Bryce, learning this mover,” Canales replied. “Diontae is a special mover. He’s really explosive, really fast through his turns. And so I’ve watched them kinda grow that chemistry. And of course, just getting out here today is another step in building that. And really just the curiosity. You see when Bryce’s reps are done, he right walks over, he’s talking to Diontae, to Adam and just making sure they’re on the same page for some of those things.”

Johnson, back in April, said that Canales told him he’d be the offense’s “X” receiver and the “first read in the progression almost every play.”

Well, Canales then told reporters pretty much the same thing this morning.

“As we build our offense, we really try to feature someone,” he added. “And for us right now—where’s Diontae Johnson at? We have our progressions and we’re gonna move him around our formation. But the rest of the guys have to come alive as the coverage is dictated.”
