Tony Ferguson signs contract, meets Khabib Nurmagomedov for UFC title on April 18

Tony Ferguson has signed his bout agreement and will meet Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight title on April 18.

[autotag]Tony Ferguson[/autotag] has signed his bout agreement and will meet [autotag]Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag] for the UFC lightweight title on April 18.

After Nurmagomedov (28-0 MMA, 12-0 UFC) inked his side of the deal earlier this week, it took slightly longer for Ferguson’s (25-3 MMA, 15-1 UFC) part of the deal to be finalized with the UFC. It was ultimately finalized though, and the highly anticipated 155-pound title fight is set.

MMA Junkie verified the news of Ferguson’s signed bout agreement on Friday with a member of his management at Ballengee Group following an initial report from ESPN.com.

The April 18 pay-per-view event, which does not have an event number, is expected to take place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The matchup between Nurmagomedov, No. 1 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie MMA lightweight rankings, and No. 2-ranked Ferguson will mark the fifth time the two have attempted to share the octagon. Each man has pulled out of two scheduled fights, which have been booked in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Should they successfully make it to the octagon this time around, both Nurmagomedov and Ferguson will bring 12-fight winning streaks into the matchup.

Sixers happy with rookie Norvel Pelle in his debut against Knicks

The Philadelphia 76ers were happy with what they saw from rookie Norvel Pelle.

The Philadelphia 76ers were need of some big men depth. They were already down Kyle O’Quinn due to an injury and due to being on a back-to-back, they decided to rest Al Horford for the night.

So, they called on 26-year old two-way rookie Norvel Pelle to make his NBA debut on one of the biggest stages in basketball. Pelle entered to a big crowd at Madison Square Garden and he did not back down. He was posterized by Knicks forward Julius Randle to begin, but that did not deter him and he bounced back to block four shots and provide some real rim protection off the bench.

Coach Brett Brown was happy with Pelle as he stated:

I thought Norvel came in and just gave us a bounce. I thought his presence at the rim was excellent, we’ve seen it with the G League team before and I thought he was excellent.

Pelle was averaging 14.3 points and 10 rebounds with the team’s G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, and he provided some good play that the team needed.

He impressed Tobias Harris who added:

To come right up from the G League and be able to make an impact today in the game, I thought he did a great job of just contesting shots, making the game a bit scrappy just by imposing his will out there. So I thought his energy was great for us.

With Horford returning on Saturday, there might not be another big opportunity for Pelle, but in the chance that Joel Embiid might sit due to it being the second half of a back-to-back, there could be some more chances for him to make even more of an impact.

The Sixers return home on Saturday to face the Indiana Pacers. [lawrence-related id=20263,20254,20244]

10 restaurants that prove Ann Arbor, Michigan is a foodie hot spot

Ann Arbor, Michigan has a globally inspired culinary scene. Here are 10 can’t-miss restaurants for a foodie tour.

Headlines may proclaim Detroit’s sizzling culinary scene, but its neighbor, Ann Arbor, set 40 miles to the west, has its own share of Motor City’s gastronomy. As in Detroit, the auto industry draws employees from far-flung locales; they bring with them their own culinary traditions and a taste for international cuisine.

Tree Town is also home to the University of Michigan, which draws professors and students from around the globe. That may explain how this Midwestern city has a worldly food scene. There’s classic Turkish dishes, new takes on Korean and, of course, a few homegrown favorites – usually paired with Michigan beer. Here are 10 of the can’t-miss restaurants.

Miss Kim

Owner and head chef Ji Hye Kim came to Ann Arbor to attend the University of Michigan. After graduation, she founded a food truck that grew into a brick-and-mortar eatery.

Eating at Miss Kim is a journey through Korean culinary history and the chef’s own school-girl days in Korea. For example, tteokbokki, rice-cake batons, are served street-style with pork belly and a slow-poached egg, and in the traditional royal style with sautéed seasonal, local vegetables.

The menu includes an expansive list of farmers, butchers and purveyors the chef sources from, but there’s a star import on the menu: Korean soju, which gets the chef’s touch in house, too, with smoky or spicy infusions.

Wilma’s

This hipster hub is a breath of fresh air in a sea of hearty Midwestern fare. Wilma’s healthy menu starts with fresh-squeezed juice and smoothies, and segues into more filling items like a decked-out avocado toast; sweet potato toast topped with whipped ricotta, balsamic glaze and Moroccan spice; and French toast made with gluten-free chocolate chip banana bread.

The airy space outfitted in cozy, bohemian décor calls for lingering over breakfast or lunch.

Ayse’s Turkish Cafe

Ayse’s restaurant may be in a nondescript strip mall, but diners feel like they’re at a family dinner in Ayse Uras’s home. Uras writes up the menu board of Turkish dishes daily; she cooks according to the ingredients she can procure from the farmer’s market and butcher.

Tables overflow with bowls of lentil stew, boreks (baked filled pastries with flaky phyllo dough), chicken kebabs, meat pies, rice and bulger pilavi, and Turkish-style baklava (made with pistachios and a syrup made from sugar, water and lemon juice).

HOMES Brewery

Breweries aren’t often known for their food, but at HOMES Brewery, the food can battle the suds for top billing. The Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior) inspired the brewery’s name, but Asian flavors season the menu from chef Jordan Balduf.

Standard bar food like chicken wings get an Asian twist with gochujang, Korean barbecue sauce or Thai dry seasoning. The kitchen stuffs bao with pork belly, pho brisket or miso eggplant, and takes a swing at classic bibimbap – all of which pair well with the brewery’s IPAs and sours.

Zingerman’s Delicatessen

With more than a dozen restaurants and artisanal producers under the company’s umbrella, Ann Arbor is dripping with Zingerman’s businesses. But the deli remains its flagship. Ari Weinzweig and Paul Saginaw founded the much-lauded delicatessen in 1982.

The celebrated sandwich menu borrows flavors from all over the world – a Dutch tosti was a recent sandwich of the month – but the classic is the #2 Reuben. President Obama raved about the sandwich after visiting in 2014.

Taste Kitchen

At this chalkboard restaurant, chef Danny Van changes the menu daily according to what’s fresh and local. Global flavors inspire the menus at Taste Kitchen, but no single locale takes the lead. Dishes have hints of French, New American and other flavor profiles.

The décor is reminiscent of a European-style brasserie, with tables nearly on top of each other and a packed bar where the stools are never empty for long.

Casablanca

Southern Michigan is a hot spot for Middle Eastern and Mediterranean restaurants, but Moroccan ones, like Casablanca, remain rare. Abdul Mani immigrated to Michigan for his father’s job at a car manufacturer.

Mani creates dishes that blend sweet and savory flavors. The menu includes his country’s classics like chicken, lamb or fish tagine as well as Moroccan mhammar (slow-cooked chicken with lemon).

Ollie Food + Spirits

In Ypsilanti (Ann Arbor’s neighboring town), the farmer’s market lies just across the street from Ollie Food + Spirits. It’s fitting then that chef Travis Schuster picks ingredients from local farms for the seasonal menu.

Dishes are both Midwestern hearty and farm fresh. Pickled vegetables lending brightness to plates and produce get whipped into unexpected places, like a pasta made with beets.

Dessous

This fine dining restaurant serves fusion cuisine at its best. Each of the owners brings a different culinary influence to Dessous, which include Indian seasoning, quality cuts of meat and fish, French and Cuban. These flavors blend seamlessly in the refined dishes

The meal may begin with a basket of naan (instead of the standard bread basket) and the latest samosa flavor, then segue into scallops or sea bass with French baked rice on the side.

Mani Osteria & Bar

In keeping with its name (“mani” means “hand” or “handmade” in Italian), Mani serves artisanal small plate dishes, housemade pasta and wood-fired pizza. It’s Old World wine menu flows – making for a laid-back dining experience in the foodie hub of Ann Arbor.

Jags passing defense could be in for a long day vs. Bucs with injuries to Myles Jack and DBs

The Jacksonville Jaguars released their final injury report for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Bucs and it appears the defense could be in for a long day. Linebacker Myles Jack (knee) and cornerback Tre Herndon (shoulder) were ruled questionable while safety Ronnie Harrison was ruled out with a concussion. Simply put, if both questionable players aren’t able to participate in Sunday’s game, fans should expect Jameis Winston and his fourth ranked passing offense to put up solid stats, making a win for the Jags significantly harder than expected.

If Jack doesn’t play it appears Donald Payne will get the nod in his spot. While Payne is familiar with the system and has spent time with the Jags, there certainly will be a drop-off with him on the field as the MIKE linebacker spot has proven to be an adjustment for even Jack. It wouldn’t be the slightest bit surprising if Bruce Arians schemed up some concepts to take advantage of Payne’s inexperience in the interior, so the Jags’ pass rush will need to have a huge day if the team is to have a chance.

As for Herndon’s spot, it will likely be manned by Breon Borders, who has one career start to his name. That puts the Jags at a huge disadvantage because the Bucs have a dynamic duo at receiver in Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, both of whom have over 1,000 yards receiving this year. Both have had multiple games where they were able to accumulate over 170 receiving yards and Sunday’s game may have a similar result because of Border’s lack of experience and the play-making abilities of Godwin and Evans.

Lastly, Andrew Wingard will get the nod in Harrison’s place. He struggled in Week 12’s game when replacing Harrison but managed to accumulate five tackles. However, with a week to prepare and see snaps with the starters, fans will have to hope his play tightens up as the Jags are looking to snap a three-game losing streak.

Colts QB Jacoby Brissett could be in for rough game vs. Titans

Brissett has particularly struggled since Week 9 while dealing with a knee injury, and he’ll be up against a tough defense.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett has been efficient since taking the reins in the wake of Andrew Luck’s retirement, but he could be in for a difficult game this week against the Tennessee Titans.

Brissett has particularly struggled since Week 9 while dealing with a knee injury, and he’ll be up against a tough defense.

Ahead of the Week 13 matchup, Tennessee has given up the ninth and eighth fewest points per game and third-down conversions, respectively. Between this and Brissett’s recent setbacks, the Colts could have some trouble on offense.

Indianapolis narrowly won the last clash between the two teams, 19-17 in Nissan Stadium.

[lawrence-related id=23010]

Brissett completed 17-of-28 passes for 146 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

So far this season, the quarterback has completed 184-of-285 pass attempts for 1,926 yards with 15 touchdowns and four interceptions.

In the Colts’ latest 20-17 loss to the Houston Texans, Brissett failed to throw for a score, completing 16-of-25 passes for 129 yards.

It will be interesting to see how well the Colts perform overall against a much-improved Titans team with a new quarterback at the helm, but it will be particularly curious to see if Brissett can overcome his struggles and get the offense into a rhythm.

The Titans and Colts are set to kick off at noon CT on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Thunder edge Pelicans late behind Dennis Schroeder’s 25 off the bench

Despite leading by 16 points early, a recurrence of Oklahoma City’s third quarter woes nearly cost OKC the game. Clutch play from reserve guard Dennis Schroeder snatched victory from the hands of a plucky Pelicans squad led by Brandon Ingram’s game-high 26-point outing.

Despite leading by as much as 16 points in the first half, the Oklahoma City Thunder nearly found themselves on the wrong end of a furious comeback attempt by the New Orleans Pelicans Saturday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

The Thunder held off Brandon Ingram’s team despite his 26-point, 8 board performance with some clutch late shots by reserve guard Dennis Schroeder, who scored a team-high 25 points and 7 assists.

A timely bucket in the fourth quarter by veteran floor general Chris Paul was also key in stopping the Pelicans’ assault, who otherwise had an unremarkable night with 7 points, 6 boards and 5 assists.

After the Thunder jumped out to an early lead, the Pelicans clawed their way into the tilt in the third frame, outscoring Oklahoma City 31-17 over the penultimate quarter in what seems to be a recurring issue for the team.

A late run in the final frame sparked by back-to-back buckets by the German point guard put the Thunder back on top, sealing the deal with a dunk by center Steven Adams in the game’s final seconds, logging 14 points and 12 boards on the evening.

Forward Danilo Gallinari put up 17 points and 7 boards and wing Abdel Nader had 19 points off the bench for the Thunder in Hamidou Diallo’s absence, and veteran shooting guard J.J. Redick contributed 16 points and 5 boards for the Pelicans’ losing effort.

The Thunder now stand at 7-11 on the season, and next face New Orleans in a potential revenge match at Smoothie King Arena tomorrow night, Sunday, Dec. 1.

Sixers’ Tobias Harris on rally to win: ‘It says we handled our job’

Philadelphia 76ers swingman Tobias Harris says the Sixers handled their job on Friday in a win over the New York Knicks.

The Philadelphia 76ers were struggling. They couldn’t find any rhythm and it resulted in them trailing the hapless New York Knicks by 16 in the first half on their way to a 51-39 deficit at halftime. They had the looks of a team that was floundering and it had a bad loss written all over it.

Then, in the second half, a flip was switched and they outscored the Knicks 62-44 on their way to a 101-95 win on Friday night on the road. It was an impressive win for the team as they were able to find a way to win despite being down two starters in Josh Richardson and Al Horford.

Tobias Harris, who scored 13 in the final 24 minutes on his way to 19 points for the game, was happy with the way the team was able to rally and win as he stated:

It says we handled our job. We did our job, what we were supposed to do which was come here and be able to still impose our will and get a victory. It means the second half we were able to wake up and get something going and get that momentum and that was really it.

Even down two starters, the Sixers have the depth and the talent to overcome that and beat a team like the Knicks. A guy like James Ennis III was able to come in and provide some good production for them off the bench and lead the rally to win the game and their defense was terrific.

Coach Brett Brown added:

I think we did a good job of defending. The third period, I thought the defense was very good. I thought Joel(Embiid), his willingness to pass, we kept going to him a lot. You wouldn’t see it on the stat sheet, but he initiated the quarterback movement. He quarterbacked the gym. I think offensively James and Tobias had some good games. It started with our defense in the third period.

The team will now look to continue this play against the Indiana Pacers on Saturday back at home where they’re undefeated. [lawrence-related id=20244,20230,20203]

Tacko Fall says knee ‘sprain’ will keep him out for about a week

Boston Celtics rookie center Tacko Fall discusses the injury he sustained after breaking a Maine Red Claws single-game record.

After recording a franchise-record 14 offensive rebounds in a win over the Memphis Hustle on Nov. 27, Boston Celtics rookie center Tacko Fall — who signed a two-way contract that has him seeing most of his action this season with the Maine Red Claws — was diagnosed with a bone bruise and was to be reassessed in 1-2 weeks.

The 7-foot-5 Fall expects to be out for about another week with what he describes as “a little sprain” but fortunately for both he and the Celtics, these days won’t count towards the allotted 45 days has with Maine’s parent club (according to NESN’s Chris Grenham).

Per MassLive’s Tom Westerholm:

Fall was signed to a two-way contract despite calls for him to have the Celtics’ final spot on the 15-man roster — which went to rookie guard Javonte Green — so that the team could prioritize his development. A significant part of that development would require on-court reps; ones he was unlikely to get in Boston with the team’s logjam at the position.

Develop Fall has, as he’s more decisive and confident in his low-post offense, while showing aggression on the glass and making the plays as a low-post defender that you would expect of a man his size.

As they say, numbers don’t lie, and the Senegal native has averaged 15.0 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.7 blocks in just 24.0 minutes per game with the Red Claws this season while shooting 69.6% from the field.

The sooner he gets back the better, so that he can continue to progress as a player under the guidance of Red Claws coach Darren Erman and Celtics assistant coach Jay Larrañaga.

Bross’ third touchdown run – an 18-yarder – gave the Bulldogs a 28-0 lead with 2:11 left in the first half. The Commodores (9-5) scored on the final play of the first half, getting a 7-yard touchdown pass from Luke Duby to Cion Townsend to make it 28-6.

Tates Creek pulled with 28-12 on Duby’s 41-yard touchdown pass to Miles Thomas at the 10:13 mark of the third quarter. But Bross added two more touchdown runs in the third quarter, the second one making it 42-12 at the 4:25 mark.
