Jason Garrett coached scared and it cost the Dallas Cowboys dearly

Jason Garrett blew it for the Cowboys on Sunday.

This is the online version of our morning newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

Jason Garrett did something against Bill Belichick and the Patriots on Sunday that you just can’t do against the Patriots and it ended up costing his team dearly – Jason Garrett coached scared.

I’m talking, of course, about his wild decision in the fourth quarter to kick a field goal instead of going for it on fourth-and-seven from the Patriots 11 yard line. The Cowboys were trailing by seven with just over six minutes left in the game. They were moving the ball against the Patriots’ stellar defense. This was their chance to have Dak Prescott make a huge a statement and make a big play in a huge situation.

Instead, Garrett called for the kicking team to take field.

Yuck.

I can only imagine Belichick was laughing so hard on the inside when he saw a kicker running onto the field. I mean, how embarrassing for Garrett.

The kick was good but the decision was not, as the Cowboys ended up losing by four points. Granted, an awful tripping call on their last drive didn’t help things but Garrett’s decision to kick a field goal is the one that should hurt the most and add only more fuel to the fire that is the Cowboys fanbase after Garrett does something stupid in a game.

Garrett should have learned something from Doug Pederson and the rival Eagles. Remember when they threw everything at the Patriots – including the “Philly Special” – in the Super Bowl a few years ago? Pederson never coached scared in that game, instead he did just the opposite and stepped down on the pedal and drove right over Belichick and the Pats on their way to winning the Super Bowl.

Garrett didn’t do that Sunday in New England and it could be what ultimately ends up costing him his job in Dallas. Jerry Jones needs a coach that isn’t afraid to go for it and make big moves. Garrett seems content with playing it safe and clapping his approval on the sideline.

Remember earlier in the season when Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson told his coach, John Harbaugh, that he wanted to go for it on fourth down inside the 10 yard line against Seattle? Jackson ran the ball in for a TD on the play and cemented his status as the leader of that team who will do whatever it takes to win. Baltimore hasn’t lost since that game and are now one of the best teams in the NFL.

Dak could have had that opportunity on Sunday, instead he had to watch some kicker run on the field and get the team three points.

Garrett didn’t coach to win on Sunday. He coached to not make mistakes.

And that was absolutely the biggest mistake that he could have made.

NFL Week 12 Awards: Eagles had the worst celebration.

Check out my weekly NFL awards, in which I take a gif-by-gif look back at the good, the bad, and the hilarious from Sunday’s NFL action. The Eagles’ defense had the worst celebration of the week – celebrating a fumble recovery while down 14 in the fourth quarter wasn’t a great look.

Quick hits: Gronk outfit jokes… Bears fan sneaks in a pie… Jefferson crushes Knicks… And more!

– Rob Gronkowski rocked a turtleneck on Fox on Sunday and fans had lots of good jokes.

– A Bears fan snuck a pumpkin pie into Sunday’s game and instantly became a hero.

– Richard Jefferson crushed the Knicks with a tremendous story about not wanting to play for the Knicks.

– Joe Theisman didn’t like seeing Dwayne Haskins taking selfies with fans at the end of Sunday’s Redskins game. Theisman really needs to calm down.

Twitter has field day with Rob Gronkowski’s outfit on FOX

Gronk’s turtleneck brings out some hilarious feedback on Twitter.

Rob Gronkowski is the ultimate source of entertainment.

The former New England Patriots tight end and current FOX Sports analyst made some noise on Sunday night with his turtleneck. He confidently wore the outfit, and Twitter had an absolute field day with it.

Zac Taylor’s debut season is now the worst start in franchise history

The Bengals head coach has surpassed even Dave Shula.

It wasn’t supposed to be this bad.

The Cincinnati Bengals were never going to contend in 2019. There were too many holes on the roster, summer injuries and pending coaching growing pains.

But nobody thought it would be the worst start in Bengals history.

That’s what Zac Taylor secured with Sunday’s 16-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Those Steelers had a bevy of notables inactive and switched to a third-string passer in the middle of the game.

Yet, Taylor’s Andy Dalton replacement, Ryan Finley, completed just 12 passes and fumbled late. The defense coughed up 190 yards on the ground.

After the game, Taylor brushed aside the history his team made.

“It’s just defeating to lose. Period. I don’t really care about the stats or the records. When you’re competitive, and you’ve put everything you’ve got into it, to lose is the worst feeling there is.”

He also shared a brief message for fans:

“Trust me, I understand the frustration. We have to win games and have a good product on the field. I continue to believe in the guys we’ve got and that we’re going to get things turned around and get things headed in a positive direction.”

That’s 10 losses in a row to Pittsburgh, two this season. The Steelers were exploitable but the Bengals remain seemingly rudderless. The defense still has big lapses and the offense can hardly move the ball.

After setting this bit of history and even surpassing Dave Shula’s 0-10 mark, Taylor has an even bigger problem to worry about — 0-16. It’s a legitimate concern and one that isn’t going to just go away.

Over the final five games, the Bengals have to deal with two games against Cleveland, one against the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, and a notable against New England.

The magnitude of an 0-16 season is such that this 0-11, worst-ever Bengals start feels tiny by comparison.

Joe Schobert playing like he deserves a big new contract

Joe Schobert is the Browns most valuable pending free agent and GM John Dorsey is only seeing the price tag rise with Schobert’s great play

Joe Schobert is the Browns’ most prominent pending free agent. Based on how he’s played the last two weeks, the price tag is only rising for Cleveland’s top linebacker.

Schobert picked off two passes against the Miami Dolphins in the Browns’ 41-24 romp. It was the second game in a row where No. 53 secured two INTs, both convincing victories.

Schobert was the best player on the field against Pittsburgh in Week 11. Not only that, he was the best defensive player on any field in the NFL that week, according to Pro Football Focus grading. He followed that up with another impressive outing against the Dolphins, with five tackles and the two INTs among his four total passes defended.

His impact in the passing game from the linebacker position is exceedingly rare. How rare, you ask?

He did it against Miami with the line in front of him decimated, missing three starters due to a combination of injury and suspension. For most of the Dolphins game, he played with multiple rookies around him.

The Browns recently paid center JC Tretter with a nice contract extension. Tretter was deserving and happy to remain in Cleveland. Now it’s time for GM John Dorsey to do the same with Schobert while the price tag is still affordable. If he keeps playing the way he has the past few weeks, other teams will be chomping at the bit to give Schobert whatever he wants.

WATCH: LaMelo Ball forces overtime with clutch three-pointer

In a historic 30-point triple-double on Sunday, LaMelo Ball’s biggest moment came on a clutch three-pointer to force overtime.

LaMelo Ball continues to find his groove in the National Basketball League and continues to one-up his performances in the process. In Sunday’s contest against the Cairns Taipans, LaMelo Ball had a historic night, becoming the youngest player in league history to record a triple-double.

But that wasn’t his only highlight of the night. Despite leading for much of the contest, the Hawks found themselves down late. After a late steal and pass that led to a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to three points, Ball hit the biggest bucket of his season.

The Next Star took a feed from Sunday Dech in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter and splashed home a three-pointer with 5.0 seconds left, eventually forcing overtime.

The basket was the 28th points of Ball’s historic night and none were bigger on the night. After his slow start to the season, Ball has found his groove and is showing out, strengthening his case to be the top pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Dan Quinn tells team there’s no time to dwell on loss to Buccaneers

The Falcons’ 35–22 loss to the Buccaneers was as frustrating as it gets, but the team must quickly shift focus to Week 13 with the New Orleans Saints coming to town for a Thursday night Thanksgiving battle.

The Falcons’ 35–22 loss to the Buccaneers was as frustrating as it gets, but the team must quickly shift focus to Week 13 with the New Orleans Saints coming to town for a Thursday night Thanksgiving battle.

In his postgame press conference, head coach Dan Quinn said he had told his players they didn’t have any time to dwell on Sunday’s letdown:

After suffering an eighth loss, the playoffs aren’t a real possibility for the Falcons this season. Still, getting two wins over a very good Saints team in less than a month would be a satisfying achievement in its own right.

The crowds at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta have been getting smaller and this team owes it to the fans to put on a respectable performance at home on Thanksgiving.

5. Winners & Losers From Week 12

Winner: FIU

Raise your hand if you saw this coming.

Former Miami head coach Butch Davis was having a disappointing season.

His Florida International team was destroyed 50-17 by a Middle Tennessee squad that lost to previously winless Rice. FIU followed it up with a tough 24-17 fight over an awful Old Dominion team, and got rolled by Florida Atlantic 37-7. At 5-5, and with Miami and at Marshall to close, the season appeared to be over, and then …

FIU 30, Miami 24.

The Golden Panthers were flagged 14 times, but they were +3 in turnover margin, survived 21 fourth quarter points by the Canes, and now … they’re going bowling.

Loser: San Jose State

The chance was there for this to be a wonderful breakthrough season for the Spartans. They started out 3-2 and stunned Army a few weeks later, but they lost five of their last six games. The regular season finale at home against Fresno State appeared to be set up as a big chance to get to six wins and bowl eligibility, but on Saturday … UNLV 38, San Jose State 35.

4-7 San Jose State suffered another losing season.

Winner: QB Kedon Slovis, USC

Is this good? In the last five games, four 400-yard passing games with four touchdown throws in each, a 515-yard day to beat arch-rival UCLA, and helping USC to win five of its last six games in a true freshman season? However, this might be a problem for …

Loser: Those who want Clay Helton gone

There will be certain departures to the next level and elsewhere, but there’s only one senior – Michael Pittman – among the 13 players who caught a pass for USC this season. The top five running backs are all juniors are younger, there’s just one senior on the O line, 12 of the top 13 tacklers are underclassmen, and Slovis is returning at quarterback.

If Clay Helton isn’t the USC head coach next season, the next guy is getting a loaded cupboard.

Winner: Ohio State’s defense

Just how good is the Buckeye D? In 2011, a national champion Alabama team allowed 184 yards per game. No one since then has gone through a season allowing fewer than 220 yards per game.

Ohio State is giving up just 217 yards per game, it’s No. 1 in scoring D, No. 1 in third down stops, and No. 1 in pass defense. Good luck, Michigan.

Loser: Defense in the Oregon State-Washington State game

Wazzu’s Anthony Gordon threw 70 times for 606 yard and six touchdowns … because he had to for an offense that turned it over five times. Oregon State scored 29 fourth quarter points, but biffed a 53-42 lead by giving up two long touchdown drives 2:10 in the 54-53 loss. In all, the two teams combined for 1,242 yards of offense.

Winner: RB Jonathan Taylor, Wisconsin vs. Purdue

Is this good? 91 carries for 762 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 8.4 yards per carry? That what Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor has done in three years against Purdue – all wins.

After doing the most minimal amount of research and giving up, let’s just assume that it’s either the greatest three-game rushing total by anyone against one team, or else it’s really, really close.

Loser: FCS teams vs. the SEC

Look, the SEC plays its layup games against the FCS late in the year instead of the beginning like most teams do – yes, it’s a late-season break, but it’s also not the needed early tune-up the other programs enjoy. With that said …

Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State played, respectively, Western Carolina, Mercer, UT Martin, East Tennessee State, and Abilene Christian. The final combined score?

251-14 with an average score of 50.2 to 2.8.

The most competitive game was Mississippi State’s 45-7 win over ACU – it was 21-7 at halftime.

Winner: Hawaii

And with one missed field goal, Hawaii is now off to its first Mountain West title game to faee Boise State.

The Rainbow Warriors beat San Diego State 14-11, and now they get a chance to potentially go to Las Vegas. If they beat the Broncos, they go to the Las Vegas Bowl as the Mountain West champ, If they lose, Boise State might end up in the Cotton Bowl as the Group of Five’s New Year’s Six representative. Either way, it’s been a fabulous year for Nick Rolovich and the program that rose up and rocked as one of the best surprises of 2019.

Loser: Maryland

The Terps have been outscored by a total of 217-38 over the last four weeks of their six-game losing streak. It’s one thing to get blasted by Ohio State, Michigan, and Minnesota, but Nebraska? Four different Maryland players attempted a pass, completing 7-of-21 throws for 57 yards in the 54-7 loss.

NEXT: The really big thing was …

4 takeaways from Broncos’ 20-3 loss to Bills

The Denver Broncos fell to 3-8 on the season following a 20-3 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 12. Here are four takeaways from the game.

The Denver Broncos put forth another dismal performance on Sunday, losing to the Buffalo Bills 20-3. The loss drops the Broncos to 3-8 on the year and one more defeat will guarantee them a third consecutive losing season.

The Bills weren’t some unstoppable force in this game but the Broncos were unable to get out of their own way, putting up some pretty sad numbers in the process. The Bills were able to just dominate the Broncos at the line of scrimmage, controlling the game from the opening kick.

Here’s what we took away from the most recent loss.

1. If you thought Brandon Allen was “the future,” you were kidding yourself

(AP Photo/Adrian Kraus)

It’s not Allen’s fault — he has done his best. But he’s not a starting quarterback and, at best, he’s a decent backup. That sounds like a bunch of guys the Broncos have tried at quarterback in recent years.

Allen was terrible in this game. He completed just 10 of the 25 passes he attempted for all of 82 yards. He held the ball too long and took some bad sacks. He threw a really bad interception and should have had at least one more and he completed a total of three passes to wide receivers.

That’s not good, and it’s not an aberration.

2. Where was the run defense?

(Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports)

Buffalo ran into, over and through the Broncos in this game and though not every run play gained huge yards, the Bills were able to stay dedicated to the ground attack and wear out the Broncos.

The Bills ran the ball a total of 47 times, picking up 244 yards in the process. That allowed them to control the clock and have the ball for a large portion of the game.

That’s really about all you need to know in terms of how this result panned out.
