Bogey-free in Bahamas: Tiger Woods cards 6-under 66 Thursday at Hero World Challenge

Tiger Woods caught fire again on the back nine Thursday, rocketing up the leaderboard into contention at his event in the Bahamas.

Despite a blistering back nine stretch on Wednesday, Tiger Woods walked off the course at even par after the first round of the Hero World Challenge thanks to a disappointing final two holes.

On Thursday, the event’s five-time winner got his revenge. Woods made eight pars and one birdie on the front nine, then proceeded to get hot once again on the back nine.

Woods made eagle on No. 11 after a terrific drive and even better approach shot, followed by a birdie on the par 3 12th hole, par on No. 13 and yet another birdie on the driveable par 4 14th. That 4 under through four hole stretch propelled Woods to T-3, just two shots behind the leaders at that time.

Another par on No. 15 and a beauty of a birdie on the 16th kept Woods within three shots of leader Patrick Reed. He saved par with a testy five footer on 17 and made par on 18 to card a bogey-free 6-under 66. He walked off the course with the best round of the day, T-3 and four shots out of the lead.

LaMelo Ball ruled out for Illawarra vs. Brisbane with foot injury

Following back-to-back triple-doubles, LaMelo Ball has been ruled out of Saturday’s matchup with the Brisbane Bullets.

Following back-to-back triple-doubles, LaMelo Ball has been ruled out of Saturday’s matchup with the Brisbane Bullets.

Up until this point, Ball had not missed a game of the NBL season but has been ruled out this weekend due to a sore foot with the incident occurring during training this week.

This minor setback leaves the Hawks even shorter at the point guard position, following Aaron Brooks’ season-ending Achilles injury in late October.

Ball’s injury comes as disappointing news after Illawarra announced the signing of import swingman Darington Hobson with fans now having to wait at least another week to see the two on the court together.

Ball is currently averaging 17.0 points, 7.6 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.6 steals in 31.3 minutes per game across the opening 12 games. His shooting struggles have seen him post percentages of 37.5 percent from the field, 25.0 percent from three and 72.3 percent from the line.

UFC DC: Aspen Ladd says weight-cut questions are ‘kinda boring’ ahead of Yana Kunitskaya bout

UFC women’s bantamweight contender Aspen Ladd wants to move on from questions about her weight cut and claim victory over Yana Kunitskaya at UFC on ESPN 7.

WASHINGTON – UFC women’s bantamweight contender [autotag]Aspen Ladd[/autotag] says she has put her weight cutting dramas firmly behind her. She just wishes everyone else could do the same, too.

Ladd said she was feeling “pretty darned good” as she prepares for her final cut down to the 136-pound bantamweight limit for her fight with Russian Yana Kunitskaya at UFC on ESPN 7, and said she didn’t foresee any issues ahead of weigh-in day on Friday.

“We woke up at 143.4 (pounds), still hydrated,” she said at a Thursday media day. “We’ve gotta go cut after this and rest all day, and go heat off the rest if there is any.”

Ladd’s last interaction with the official scale wasn’t a happy occasion. Clearly in significant discomfort, Ladd successfully made weight for her bout against Germaine de Randamie at UFC on ESPN+ 13 in July. But she gained a whopping 18 pounds between weigh-in day and fight night, prompting the California State Athletic Commission to suspend her bantamweight license until she provides “extensive medical documentation” to prove she’s capable of fighting safely in the division.

[lawrence-related id=455211,453188,430130]

However, Ladd has no such barriers to competition elsewhere, and she is cleared and ready to fight at bantamweight this weekend. And, perhaps understandably following all the drama surrounding her recent weight cuts, she admitted she’s grown a little tired of the constant questions about her weight.

“It comes up a lot – frequently,” she said. “The last one was pretty rough, but I still made the weight, so it’s something I still get asked a lot. It’s kind of like a redundant question. Like, ‘How do you feel in fight week?’ You hear it 5 million times. So it’s kinda boring.”

Ladd says her confidence ahead of weigh-in day comes from a more integrated approach to her weight-management in the lead-up to fight week, citing the closer working relationship between her team and the sports scientists at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas.

Now Ladd’s focus is firmly on claiming victory over Kunitskaya on Saturday night, and she says she won’t let her recent quick-fire TKO loss at the hands of de Randamie affect her confidence heading into the contest.

“I kind of look at this thing regardless as a marathon, not a sprint,” she said. “It’s a rough night, don’t get me wrong – it’s not fun. Nobody likes to lose, and this is your career, your job. But at the same time, you can’t get too headcase-y over it because at that point, it’s on to the next. You’ve gotta get ready and get back on the horse.”

Following her failed appeal against what she perceived to be an unfairly swift intervention by referee Herb Dean to stop her last contest, Ladd says she’s leaving the past in the past and focusing on the job in hand this weekend.

“I’ve put a lot of that behind me and out in the media if you want to go and find it, kinda thing. But it’s really not worth talking about at this point,” she said. “As far as when I have a fight, it’s the end of the world – nothing exists beyond it. So that’s the only point I’m trying to get to, because nothing matters after that. I need to go out and perform, and the next step in your life can start (after that).”

Colts vs. Buccaneers: 3 reasons for optimism in Week 14

Reasons for optimism in Week 14.

The Indianapolis Colts (6-6) are getting ready to hit the road for a Week 14 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-7) at Raymond James Stadium hoping to keep their playoff aspirations alive.

Though the Colts face a tough road to the playoffs and are far from making that a reality, there are some reasons for optimism Indy could get back on track with a road win.

Here are three reasons for optimism in Week 14:

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Jameis Winston is still turnover prone

The No. 1 overall selection from the 2015 NFL Draft has been shaky this season. That could probably the synopsis for his entire career. While Winston still has the massive play ability, the defense should be in for an opportunistic game.

Winston has 20 interceptions on the season and six(!) games with at least two interceptions thrown. He has thrown eight interceptions in the last four games, but the Buccaneers are still rolling. With the defense playing well over the last five or six games, they could find plenty of opportunities to swing the momentum.

Bucs secondary is exploitable

While the Buccaneers have a stout run defense and a solid pass rush led by the career revival of linebacker Shaq Barrett—who has 14.5 sacks already this season—the Colts can move the ball through the air. That might not be all that encouraging given the struggles Indy has had this season with the deep ball, but this gives them a chance to do something about it.

Jacoby Brissett has a chance to show off the incredibly strong arm he has. The Bucs are allowing the second-most passing yards per game (281.8) and the third-most passing touchdowns (27) to opposing offenses. Even without T.Y. Hilton and Eric Ebron, Brissett should be able to find ways to move the ball through the air. If he can’t, there are bigger issues at hand than losing to the Bucs.

Marlon Mack’s potential return

We still don’t know what the status of Mack will be for this game, but there is a chance the third-year back makes his return from a fractured hand for the first time in four games. The Bucs are one of the best run defenses in the NFL and the Colts are coming off of an outing that resulted in the backfield taking 3.8 yards per carry in the home loss.

With the weapons on the offense dwindling down each week, Mack’s potential return could spark some production for the unit. If anything, Mack’s presence might be able to open up some opportunities for Brissett in the passing game.

UNLV Reportedly Looking at Utah DC Morgan Scalley, Oregon OC Marcus Arroyo

Will the Rebels take a coordinator from Utah or Oregon?

UNLV Reportedly Looking at Utah DC Morgan Scalley, Oregon OC Marcus Arroyo

Pac-12 title game could feature the future UNLV head coach.

Contact/Follow @JeremyMauss & @MWCwire

Rebels are looking for an up and coming coach.

The UNLV coaching search is underway but UNLV athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois is in no rush to pick the next coach. The Las Vegas Review-Journal is reporting that the search will likely go through late next week.

The Las Vegas-based paper has a few names to report on as well and they are young coordinators on ranked teams. Utah defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley and Oregon offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo.

The reports say there is at least some level of mutual interest between Scalley and Arroyo; neither has been a head coach. This should make some UNLV fans more interested in tuning into the Pac-12 title game this Friday night as it is the Ducks vs. the Utes.

Scalley has been a mainstay at Utah ever since he was a player where he played safety where was named Mountain West co-defensive player of the year in 2004, the same year the Utes busted the BCS.

He is known as a great recruiter and was Utah’s recruiting coordinator from 2009 through 2016. Scalley was a big reason the Utes got talent from Texas as that was one of his primary areas in recruitment.

This year the Utes defense is one of the best in the FBS and is third in scoring defense at 11.3-points per game allowed, fourth in yards per play allowed and first in rushing yards per play allowed.

As for Arroyo, he also is the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach in addition to running the Oregon offense. Being the quarterback’s coach has to be alluring for UNLV as he is going to have a first-round, if not a top-10, quarterback selected in the upcoming NFL Draft in Justin Herbert.

In his senior year, Herbert has thrown for 3,140 yards, 31 touchdowns, only five interceptions, and is completing 67.5 percent of his passes. The Rebels could use that kind of output under center since this year saw UNLV play multiple quarterbacks with neither having overwhelming success.

Arroyo also has ties to the conference as he played quarterback at San Jose State and ultimately became its offensive coordinator and he held that same position with Wyoming for two years. He also has a year of NFL experience as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback coach in 2014.

With these two coaches involved in the Pac-12 title game, this Friday night do not expect a hire to be made.

Sean Payton reminds Saints fans to show out, get loud for early 49ers game

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton values his homefield advantage, and wants fans ready for an early kickoff with the San Francisco 49ers.

[jwplayer FgrNrsL9-ThvAeFxT]

New Orleans saints head coach Sean Payton appreciates the impact his home crowd can make inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, and he’s doing all he can to inspire their support again this week. And it isn’t the first time he’s gone out of his way to compliment — and challenge — the rowdy Who Dat Nation; back in October, Payton suggested fans would wake up easier with help from a Bloody Mary cocktail on their way to a noon kickoff against the Arizona Cardinals. He’s driving that point home again ahead of Sunday’s game with the San Francisco 49ers.

“We think about a lot of things, we think about everything, is it going to be loud, can we be louder?” Payton said during his Thursday media availability before Saints practice. “It’s going to be a noon game. Does the crowd realize how much of an impact they can have. Do they truly realize that?”

However, the visiting team isn’t quite so mindful of the crowd. 49ers running back Raheem Mostert has been impressed by how well fans have traveled this season for road games with teams lacking homefield support, like the Cincinnati Bengals, Washington Redskins, and Los Angeles Rams. He’s said he expects Sunday’s game in the Superdome to feel like a neutral site game.

We’ll see how that works out for him. If Payton gets his way and Saints fans turn out in droves even with a midday kickoff, there shouldn’t be any doubt by the time the final whistle calls.

ESPN names best team fits for 3 Chargers in 2020

Philip Rivers and Melvin Gordon find new homes in 2020.

This offseason is going to be one of the most enticing ones that we’ve seen in years for the Chargers. With a handful of notables whose contracts are up, general manager Tom Telesco will have some tough decisions to make.

Among the crop of soon-to-be free agents is quarterback Philip Rivers, tight end Hunter Henry and running back Melvin Gordon.

ESPN’s Field Yates did an exercise where he played matchmaker for the top 25 free agents for 2020, pairing them with the best landing spot come March.

First up is Rivers. Yates believes that Los Angeles will not elect to re-sign the veteran quarterback and with him hitting the market, he believes Rivers would be a great fit for the Chicago Bears, who are currently on fence with Mitchell Trubisky after an underwhelming season.

If not for the strong play of Ryan Tannehill, the easy route would have been suggesting Rivers to the Titans, who play in his home state. Obviously a return to Los Angeles is in play here, but Rivers’ unsteady play this season has people at least wondering about his future. Chicago needs a quarterback fix and is in no position to draft one without a first-round pick. This would be a fun one.

The next one up is Henry. Though he’s been hampered with injuries throughout his career, he is a playmaker that L.A. needs in the passing game, and it’s unlikely that they would move on from him, which is why Yates has him staying put.

Henry is a legitimate, bona fide, no-doubt-about-it star when healthy. He has unfortunately dealt with multiple injuries early in his career but has returned strong this season and is one of the game’s top tight ends. The Chargers need to ensure he’s a part of their core to build around going forward.

Lastly is Gordon, who held out this past offseason with the desire to receive a pretty hefty paycheck, but the Chargers chose not to pay him anything more than $10 million annually. Yates believes that no matter how Gordon finishes the year, the team still isn’t going to dish the money to the 26-year old back.

Instead, an AFC West rival signs him to one-year deal to prove his worth and that he can stay healthy for the full slate.

Hear me out: The Chiefs have used a committee approach this season at running back with mixed results. I do not expect them to pony up substantial cash for a back this offseason, and I’m not convinced Gordon sees a robust market. Let’s envision a scenario where Gordon doesn’t fetch that long-term deal he desires and realizes a season in a high-octane offense to build his value back up makes sense for a payday in 2021. A modest one-year, prove-it deal? Sensible to me.

Against the Spread: Cowboys’ Prescott not averse to Chicago’s cold

The pick against the spread for Thursday night’s game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Chicago Bears.

December has arrived, and with it a chance for the Dallas Cowboys to make a run and again become the threat they were three weeks into the season. The first stop is at Soldier Field on Thursday night where they, as three-point favorites, will face a Chicago Bears team that’s experienced similar disappointment throughout the 2019 NFL season.

Despite Chicago’s underwhelming performance, they’ve found themselves as underdogs just three times, winning one of the contests outright but failing to cover the spread two others. The Bears are, in fact, the single worst team to rely on in betting this season, going just 3-9 against the spread.

Dallas, on the other hand, has been successful against the spread this year, going 7-5 across all of their games. As road favorites, the Cowboys are 3-2, with a two-point loss against the New Orleans Saints and the shocking 24-22 defeat at the hands of the New York Jets.

The concern on Thursday night is Chicago’s tough defense and sound special teams, two areas that have marred the Dallas season to date. According to DVOA, the four best defenses that the Cowboys have faced are the New England Patriots, the Buffalo Bills, the Saints and the Jets, all ranking in the top 10 in that metric, all losses.

Quarterback Dak Prescott and his squad have managed to score an average of 14 points across those games. Add another top 10 defense to the list with a twist of a night game in blustery December Chicago.

If weather is a concern, know that Prescott has played in just five meaningful games with temperatures at or below the 42 degree forecast in Chicago Thursday night. The Cowboys are 3-2 straight up and 4-1 against the spread in those scenarios. His quarterback rating in those games is 93.89, which is under his career average but not in anyway that would seem significant enough for concern.

The Verdict: The Cowboys stave off a week of Jason Garrett getting fired chatter while covering the spread (-3). The lowly UNDER of 37 comes through.

On the year: 8-4 ATS, 8-4 over/under.

Why Willie McGinest doubts Tom Brady would play for the Chargers

Tom Brady and the Chargers? Willie McGinest shares one big reason why he doesn’t see it.

It stands to reason that Tom Brady and the Los Angeles Chargers could be a logical match in 2020.

Brady is set to be a free agent in 2019, and while it’s entirely possible the New England Patriots will re-sign him, the possibility for a departure remains very real. If he does leave New England, Brady would look for a desirable landing spot, and few places look better than L.A., which seems to be at least considering moving on from quarterback Philip Rivers. The Chargers boast a talented roster, with a handful of excellent skill players. What’s more, the huge market could be the perfect place for Brady to build his TB12 brand, a wholistic approach to reaching peak performance.

But there’s one major problem. And NFL Network analyst and retired Patriots linebacker Willie McGinest has the scoop.

“I’ll just give you one little nugget. Somebody who is really important to Tom Brady — his other half (Gisele Bundchen) — doesn’t like it out here in California,” McGinest said this week during an appearance on The Dave Dameshek Football Program. “So that may factor into that decision, too.”

While many suggest that Brady and Bill Belichick to try to sustain success without each other, McGinest wasn’t so sure. He said they’re like family — they’re tight knit, even if there are squabbles. McGinest suggested a hypothetical scenario that might help the Patriots keep Brady around. It involved Belichick giving Brady “every resource” during the upcoming offseason, as suggested by McGinest. That meant appeasing Brady’s needs on the offensive line and at the skill positions by adding the talent Brady wants.

But that’s never how Belichick has operated. He rarely defers to top personnel evaluators like Nick Caserio — who will someday be an NFL general manager — let alone the quarterback who has no experience evaluating and scouting talent. So McGinest’s suggestion is, in a way, more preposterous than that idea of Brady joining the Chargers. Surely, Brady expresses his interest in players. Surely, Belichick takes those suggestions with a grain of salt.

If Brady is to return to the Patriots, it will likely be because he and Belichick come to a contract that is friendly to New England. That’s how it has always been with the Patriots.
