The Green Bay Packers won’t have fans in the stands for the first two home games of the 2020 season, but the team is still hopeful Lambeau Field will be able to host fans at some point later in the year.
The Packers are planning to use the first two home games to focus on safely executing the gameday experience for players and personnel. But with the team’s third home game not until Nov. 1, the Packers aren’t ruling out a chance to have fans in attendance over the final two months of the season.
“We are hopeful that we will be able to host fans for games later in the season, should conditions allow,” team president Mark Murphy said Thursday. “We will continue to consult with community healthcare and public health officials on the pandemic conditions in our area. We ask our fans to continue to help by wearing masks and maintaining social distancing guidelines.”
Murphy said earlier this month that the Packers wouldn’t have any more than 10,000 to 12,000 fans at games if fans were allowed during the 2020 season. Actually playing the games is more important than having fans at every game.
“The first priority is getting the games in and getting them on television. If we are able to do that, it will cover our player costs. We are going to be very cautious whether we have fans in the stands,” Murphy said, via Richard Ryman of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
The Packers host the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 1. They’ll have the Detroit Lions (Sept. 20) and Atlanta Falcons (Oct. 5) at Lambeau Field for the first two fanless home games.
