Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers told “The Pat McAfee Show” that he understands there are no absolutes in the NFL but he sees no reason why he wouldn’t be back as the starting quarterback in Green Bay in 2021.
“Now, obviously, after the season that I had, potentially winning MVP and we obviously made another good run, I don’t think that there’s any reason why I wouldn’t be back, but, look, there aren’t many absolutes in this business,” Rodgers said.
Speculation ran wild after Rodgers expressed uncertainty over his own future in the immediate moments following the Packers’ loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game.
“It was more a realization, I think, that ultimately my future is not necessarily in my control,” Rodgers said. “It just kind of hit me in the moment. I was thinking about Aaron Jones and Corey Linsley and other guys we have under contract, Big Dog, guys who I don’t know what their future is going to be, myself included.”
Rodgers is under contract for three more seasons, but the Packers have big decisions to make on many key free agents this offseason and Jordan Love, the team’s 2020 first-round pick, is developing behind Rodgers as the potential future at quarterback.
Both coach Matt LaFleur and team president Mark Murphy gave strong answers affirming Rodgers would be back with the Packers in 2021.
Rodgers said he gave a “real answer in the moment” during the press conference and didn’t necessarily reveal anything new regarding his future, which does include some level of uncertainty at 37 years old and after the Packers drafted Love in the first round last April.
“I don’t feel like I said anything that I hadn’t said before,” Rodgers said.
