The Green Bay Packers are one of a few teams to meet “multiple times” with Alabama edge rusher Terrell Lewis during the pre-draft process, according to Trevor Sikkema of The Draft Network.
Other teams to meet Lewis more than once include the New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons.
A former five-star recruit, Lewis (6-5, 262) produced 11.5 tackles for losses and 6.5 sacks over 11 games with Alabama in 2019. Significant injuries suffered in both 2017 and 2018 limited him to just four games over the two seasons, complicating his evaluation as a player.
However, Lance Zierlein of NFL.com notes that Lewis has “exciting physical and athletic traits to work with” and the potential to develop into a “future NFL starter.”
GM Brian Gutekunst and his staff are likely ensuring they have all the information possible on a talented player that could fall unexpectedly due to injury concerns, even if the player is at a position lacking immediate need.
Edge rusher remains a premium position, and teams do everything they can do make sure they’re set, both in the present and future.
The Packers have spent a lot of resources on edge players in the past 12 months, signing Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith to big deals and using the 12th overall pick in last year’s draft to take Michigan’s Rashan Gary. Lewis, a potential first-round pick, probably wouldn’t make roster-building sense for the Packers, who hold the 30th overall pick, but it won’t be surprising if Gutekunst attempts to build more depth there, especially if Kyler Fackrell departs in free agency.
