Packers lose out to Rams on waiver claim for long snapper

The Packers put in a waiver claim for long snapper Matt Orzech but the Rams won the player.

The Green Bay Packers nearly made a second addition at long snapper this offseason.

According to Field Yates of ESPN, the Packers put in a waiver claim for long snapper Matt Orzech but lost out on the player to the Los Angeles Rams due to waiver claim priority.

Orzech was released by the Tennessee Titans earlier this week. He was the Jacksonville Jaguars’ long snapper for all 16 games in 2019.

The Packers signed long snapper Joe Fortunato in late March to compete with Hunter Bradley, a 2018 draft pick and the team’s long snapper for the last three seasons. General manager Brian Gutekunst hasn’t stopped looking for competition at a position that was far too inconsistent under Bradley’s watch in 2020.

The Packers have two players at all three specialist positions: long snapper (Bradley, Fortunato), kicker (Mason Crosby, JJ Molson) and punter (JK Scott, Ryan Winslow).
