Packers lead NFL in explosive plays through 4 weeks in 2024

Through 4 weeks, the Packers have an NFL-high 38 explosive plays — 21 rushes of 10 or more yards and 17 receptions of 20 or more yards

Matt LaFleur and the Green Bay Packers have produced the most explosive offense in football through four games in 2024.

According to charting from Marcus Mosher, the Packers have an NFL-high 38 explosive plays, as defined by a catch of 20 or more yards or a run of 10 or more yards. Green Bay has 21 runs of 10 or more yards and 17 catches of 20 or more.

The Packers currently rank second in explosive runs (trailing only the Ravens with 25) and second in explosive catches (trailing only the 49ers with 18).

Receiver Jayden Reed leads the NFL with seven catches of 20 or more yards. Running back Josh Jacobs is sixth among running backs with nine explosive runs of 10 or more yards.

The Packers and 49ers are the only two teams with at least 15 explosive plays in the run and passing game through four weeks. Green Bay also has incredible playmaking depth — nine different players currently have an explosive play. And it won’t be surprising if Jordan Love, Luke Musgrave and even rookie running back MarShawn Lloyd are eventually added to the tally.

In Week 5, the Packers will go to Los Angeles to play the Rams, who have only 18 explosive plays, including just five explosive runs.

Why are explosive plays important? They often create instant scoring opportunities. Methodically marching down the field is one way to play offense, but the best team skip the tedious work and create big chunks. Especially with average starting field position improving with new kickoff rules, even one explosive play on offense can put a team into field goal range.
