The Green Bay Packers may have the opportunity to use the 30th overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft on a future starting offensive tackle, so GM Brian Gutekunst is doing some extra homework on one of the top first-round candidates.
According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Packers are one of at least 13 teams to meet virtually with Houston offensive tackle Josh Jones, a likely first-round pick later this month.
The Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings, two rival teams in the NFC North, have also met via video with Jones.
Teams must meet with prospects virtually ahead of the draft due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Jones (6-5, 319) was a dominant pass-blocker at Houston, allowing only 28 total pressures over the last three years, including just four last season, per Pro Football Focus.
An athletic, fleet-footed tackle with experience playing left tackle and a strong history blocking in the passing game, Jones looks like a strong match with the Packers, a team likely to need to a long-term starter at right tackle.
Jones is one of several first-round quality offensive tackles in the draft class. It’s certainly possible the best player on the Packers’ board once they are on the clock at No. 30 overall is an offensive tackle, with Jones representing one of the best possible options.
