The reasoning: “The Packers have traded up in each of the past three first rounds. Newsome has the kind of feet and athleticism that won’t last long. The junior gave up fewer than 100 yards this past season.”
Our breakdown: Trading up into the early 20s to target one of the top cornerbacks, offensive tackles or wide receivers looks like such a feasible scenario for the Packers, a team that was one game away from the Super Bowl in back-to-back years and has favored moving up to get players in the first round recently. Newsome, PFF’s No. 20 overall player in the class, is a 20-year-old cornerback prospect with length and elite athleticism, and he’s coming off a terrific 2020 season in which he shut down just about everyone. This is a player that checks just about every box for the Packers. He’s a little slender-framed and has an injury history, but nothing looks like a long-term concern. The fit is nearly perfect, with Newsome looking capable of operating at a high level in man-to-man schemes and zone coverages. He would compete for a starting job as a rookie and be the expected starter opposite Jaire Alexander in 2022. Moving up eight spots in a trade with the Colts could cost a third-round pick or both of Green Bay’s fourth-round picks.
