The Green Bay Packers added a pair of former Miami Dolphins defenders ahead of the 2020 NFL draft.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Packers claimed defensive lineman Gerald Willis and edge rusher Jamal Davis off of waivers from the Dolphins.
Willis (6-2, 302) produced 18 tackles for losses and four sacks as a senior at Miami but still went undrafted last year. He signed with the Baltimore Ravens following the draft, spent training camp with the team but was released at final roster cutdowns. He eventually ended up on the Dolphins practice squad. He played two games late in the season before going on injured reserve.
Davis (6-4, 240) went undrafted out of Akron. He had 31.5 tackles for losses and 7.5 sacks his final two seasons in college. He spent training camp with the Houston Texans and later played in three regular season games for the Dolphins in 2019. Davis has long arms and plenty of athleticism. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds, finished the three-cone drill in 7.0 seconds and hit 39″ in the vertical leap and 10-2 in the broad jump at the combine.
The Packers hold 10 picks in the 2020 draft, but any picks along the defensive line and at edge rusher will now have more competition come training camp. In just over two years as GM, Brian Gutekunst has shown a preference for churning the bottom of the roster with waiver claims.
