Going on the COVID-19 reserve list probably prevented Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander from making his return to the field on Sunday.
Although Alexander practiced on Friday and will come off the reserve list, potentially on Saturday, coach Matt LaFleur said he isn’t anticipating him to play after practicing only once this week.
“I would not anticipate Jaire playing. Just only having the one day this week, I don’t want to put him out there,” LaFleur said.
Later on Friday, the Packers officially ruled out Alexander for Sunday’s game.
Alexander was placed on the reserve list last Sunday and missed practices on Wednesday and Thursday. He hasn’t played in a game since Week 4 when he suffered a significant shoulder injury while making a tackle on Steelers running back Najee Harris.
The Packers have leaned on rookie Eric Stokes and veterans Rasul Douglas, Chandon Sullivan and Kevin King at cornerback without Alexander over the last three months.
If Alexander misses Sunday’s season finale in Detroit, he’ll have to wait until the NFC Divisional Round in two weeks to make his return.
Alexander was activated from injured reserve on Dec. 29. He was listed as limited for Friday’s practice.
