Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander has emerged as one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks in zone coverage.
As he did recently with cornerbacks in man coverage, Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar evaluated the position to find the best of the best in zone coverage. Alexander, the Packers’ third-year cornerback, came in at No. 6 on the 11-player list.
According to Farrar and Sports Info Solutions, Alexander allowed only 23 catches while in zone coverage and led all NFL cornerbacks in “Positive Play Rate” of 29.1 percent.
From Farrar: “Alexander is an outstanding athlete with the downfield speed to track with vertical routes, and the agility to match up with quicker receivers anywhere on the field.”
Alexander trailed only James Bradberry, Stephon Gilmore, Janoris Jenkins, Richard Sherman and Tre’Davious White among the NFL’s best zone corners.
According to Pro Football Focus, Alexander allowed 55 total catches and a passer rating of 87.3 during the 2019 season. He intercepted two passes and broke up 13 others.
In Alexander and Kevin King, the Packers defense has a top cornerback in both zone coverage and man coverage.
