Packers at Lions: 5 things to watch and a prediction

Five things to watch and a prediction for Sunday’s Week 17 battle between the Packers and Lions at Ford Field.

The Green Bay Packers are treating Sunday’s season finale in Detroit as a playoff game. Why? Because a win over the 3-11-1 Lions will clinch a first-round bye – and possibly more – for Matt LaFleur’s team.

Here are five things to watch and a prediction for Sunday’s Week 17 showdown at Ford Field:

1. Milestone hunting

Running back Aaron Jones is 16 rushing yards away from his first career 1,000-yard season and one touchdown away from a franchise-record-tying 20 total touchdowns. Davante Adams is 96 receiving yards away from a second consecutive 1,000-yard season. Za’Darius Smith needs one sack to enter the top-five in franchise history for a season and one tackle for loss to tie Clay Matthews’ franchise record. Aaron Rodgers is 321 passing yards away from his eighth career 4,000-yard passing season. Mason Crosby is on the verge of setting the new franchise record for field goal percentage in a season. Jaire Alexander is four pass breakups away from becoming just the fifth player in franchise history with at least 20 breakups in a season.

2. Pressuring the rookie

The Packers pressured Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins into submission on Monday night, allowing just 82 net passing yards on 32 attempts while sacking Cousins five times. Making third-string quarterback David Blough uncomfortable early could lead to a similar result. Blough is capable of making plays downfield with his arm, but the rookie can be easily unsettled in the pocket and easily disrupted by pressure. The Packers should have no problems getting to Blough, who has been sacked 13 times in four starts.

3. Battling Babytron

Few players have tortured the Packers more over the last three seasons than Lions receiver Kenny Golladay, who has 11 catches for 299 yards and two touchdowns in just three games against the Packers since 2017. He caught touchdown passes in wins over the Packers at Ford Field in 2017 and 2018, and he produced 121 receiving yards on five catches in the first meeting this season. With Marvin Jones and T.J. Hockenson on IR, Golladay is one of the last Lions offensive players capable of truly affecting the game in a major way on Sunday. He has 1,118 receiving yards and 11 scores in 2019. Expect the Packers defense to give extra attention to No. 19.

4. Fighting Flowers

The Lions are one of the NFL’s worst pass-rushing teams, but defensive end Trey Flowers still has the talent and versatility to disrupt a game. It’s possible David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga will each get chances to block him in pass protection on Sunday. Remember the first meeting? Flowers was penalized for a pair of crucial (and questionable) hands-to-the-face penalties. He’ll want to finish his first season in Detroit with a bang. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers passing game will have all sorts of time if Flowers is kept blocked up.

5. Lazard’s rise

The breakout night for Packers receiver Allen Lazard came against the Lions on Monday night in October. He caught a late touchdown pass and helped spark the comeback. Two months later, Lazard has become the No. 2 receiver behind Davante Adams and a trusted target for Aaron Rodgers. Can they keep building their connection in the season finale? Lazard figures to be an important part of the Packers’ playoff run. Fresh off a nine-target night in Minnesota, Lazard could be a go-to player again if the Lions shadow Adams with Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay.

Prediction: Packers 34, Lions 12 (11-4)

The Lions are limping to the finish line in 2019, having lost eight straight games overall and three straight games by more than one score. Matt Patricia’s team is still playing hard, but it’s tough to be truly competitive with all the injuries and absences on the roster. The Packers are rolling and have all the motivation in the world to win. Expect Matt LaFleur’s team to dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Securing a big early lead could allow the Packers to coast to a 13th win and a well-deserved first-round bye.
