The Green Bay Packers are one of several teams showing the “most” interest in Florida International quarterback and Ashwaubenon native James Morgan, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.
The Packers have Tim Boyle and Manny Wilkins behind Aaron Rodgers on the quarterback depth chart but could use a talented young player to groom at the game’s most important position.
Morgan (6-4, 229) participated in the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis this past week. He was a four-year collegiate starter, his first two years at Bowling Green and the final two at Florida International. Overall, Morgan played in 42 total games, completing 57.2 percent of his passes for 8,654 yards, 65 touchdowns and 34 interceptions. His best year was as a junior in 2018 when he completed 65.3 percent of his passes and tossed 26 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.
Growing up in Green Bay, Morgan idolized Packers quarterbacks Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers.
Lance Zierlein of NFL.com believes Morgan is a “tough guy with a big arm” but who lacks accuracy, touch and pocket presence, limiting his professional upside.
However, a strong performance throwing the football at the combine elevated Morgan’s draft stock around the league.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported coaches and executives see Morgan as potentially the next Gardner Minshew, making it possible he’ll be a mid-round pick for a team looking to groom a backup quarterback.
The Packers have seven picks currently on Day 3 of the 2020 draft. GM Brian Gutekunst could target Morgan with one of them, bringing the local quarterback home to work and develop under Rodgers.
