Robert Saleh took a moment out of his Friday press conference to talk about the shooting at Michigan’s Oxford High School, which left four dead and seven injured Tuesday.
The Jets head coach, wearing an Oxford Wildcats T-shirt, shared the names of the four students who died. One played for the high school’s football team.
“I grew up an hour from there, and obviously everyone’s familiar with the shooting,” Saleh said Friday. “I wanted to recognize Madisyn Baldwin, Hana St. Juliana, Justin Shilling and Tate Myre. Tate obviously played for the football team.”
Baldwin was 17, St. Juliana was 14, Shilling was 17, and Myre was 16. Myre, who played running back and tight end and also wrestled, died while trying to disarm the shooter, according to the Detroit Free Press.
“An absolute tragedy,” Saleh added. “Through that tragedy, there’s a lot of heroes that take place.”
Saleh has a close connection to the state of Michigan. He grew up and played high school football in Dearborn and played college football at Northern Michigan. He got his first coaching jobs at Michigan State and Central Michigan.
