Oregon website finds a legitimate way to prevent Caleb Williams from being ranked No. 1

Those clever fellows at @Ducks_Wire used a specific formula in which Caleb Williams isn’t No. 1 among Pac-12 QBs. Well-played (but he’s still the best, of course).

Bloggers and website staff writers, in the middle of the summer, stay up late at night thinking about creative and novel ideas for posts. If you know, you know.

At Ducks Wire, Don Smalley came up with a nuanced idea which enabled him to rank Bo Nix ahead of Caleb Williams. He isn’t being unfair. He’s merely using an avenue of comparison in which Nix can legitimately be rated higher than Williams among Pac-12 quarterbacks.

It doesn’t mean Nix is the best. No one would say Nix is the best. It merely means that in one specific category, Nix rates higher for reasons Caleb can’t really control.

The category: cumulative returning production.

Here’s Smalley on Nix:

“This list is solely based on one’s entire career and Bo Nix is a clear No. 1 since he’s the only Pac-12 quarterback to have four full seasons under his belt thanks to the 2020 pandemic season.

“Even then, Nix is one of the better quarterbacks in a conference that is filled with great quarterback play. Once his career is over, Nix will go down as one of the best to play in the game in the last decade.”

On that last sentence, we might disagree, but the point stands: Nix has played four seasons, Caleb two. Cumulative statistical production is an area where Nix rates higher.

Well-played, Ducks Wire. We still know who the real sheriff in town is among Pac-12 quarterbacks, however.
