The Oregon Ducks and Arizona Wildcats will meet on Saturday for the 46th time ever, with Oregon holding a 28-17 advantage in the record books.
That is far from the entire story, however, as these two teams have had some epic battles in recent years – despite Arizona’s struggles for most of the past decade.
Every one of Oregon’s victories against Arizona since 2010 has been by 19 or more points, but it’s the losses – three of them – that stand out.
Many fans will remember the debacle that was 2018, when Kevin Sumlin’s 3-5 Wildcats absolutely smacked the then No. 19 ranked Ducks, winning 44-15 in Tucson and stunning first year head coach Mario Cristobal.
The Ducks also took losses to the Wildcats in 2013 and 2014, although Mark Helfrich got his redemption with a massive 51-13 victory to secure a Pac-12 championship in December, leading to Oregon’s only CFP appearance to date.
Oregon and Arizona also had an all-timer in 2008, when Mike Bellotti and Mike Stoops forgot to tell their teams to play defense. Oregon took home the victory by a score of 55-45, the first of five consecutive victories over the Wildcats.
Saturday’s matchup probably won’t have triple digit points, but it could end up a high-scoring affair. Dan Lanning will hope to avoid the kind of stunning loss his predecessor Cristobal suffered in his first year at the helm in Eugene.
