DJ Johnson
Johnson, like McGee, considered leaving the program after the 2021 season before making the decision to return and play under new coach Dan Lanning. Lanning’s reputation as an excellent defensive coach likely had something to do with Johnson’s decision to return, even though he began his career in Eugene as a tight end.
Johnson was exclusively an offensive player in 2020, but played both sides of the ball in 2021, racking up 18 tackles and one sack, a big one in the closing minutes against Ohio State.
Now, with Johnson announcing a jersey number change to No. 2 – a number taken by wide receiver Dont’e Thornton – it makes it even more likely the big man is planning to play mostly a defensive role this upcoming season.
Spring ball will give us a better idea about his role this year, but don’t be surprised to see Johnson playing both sides of the ball once again in 2022.
