Seven McGee
McGee is going to be one of the most fun players to watch this year – not just in spring ball, but in the fall as well.
The departures of Travis Dye (USC) CJ Verdell (NFL) and Trey Benson (Florida State) opened up a ton of carries in the backfield, carries that will likely go to some combination of McGee, Byron Cardwell, Sean Dollars, and newcomer Jordan James.
McGee’s electric speed will make him a menace when he gets into open field, which could happen as a traditional halfback – but could also happen in a hybrid running back/wide receiver role, a la De’Anthony Thomas.
McGee racked up 21 touches for 145 yards and a touchdown in his first season in Eugene last year, and that was enough to convince Lanning to work hard to keep him in a Ducks uniform, and to make a comment indicating he may be looking at other ways to get him involved in the playbook
“We have some talent at other positions obviously, on offense, and we’ll use guys in a variety of ways,” Lanning said. “You know, even if that means putting a wideout in the backfield or moving people around, I think we can do that here. But we’re always going to look to enhance the backfield.”
How new offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham uses McGee in spring ball will help give fans a good idea of what exactly that role could look like this fall.
Next up is another offensive turned defensive player, who is returning to Eugene for one more season…
