One hypothetical Trent Williams trade-scenario that the Redskins have to accept

The Redskins have been trying to offload Williams for a few months now, with seemingly no team willing to pay what they want for him.

Many people are busy wondering what it would take for the Washington Redskins to trade out of their first-round pick in the NFL Draft in order to move down and secure more assets, passing up Chase Young along the way. However, it may be a more pertinent question to ponder what the Redskins would give up to trade away Trent Williams, their veteran left tackle who is highly unlikely to return to the team any time soon after holding out for most of the 2019 season and extending his grievances throughout 2020 as well.

In a post that features an array of aggressive draft day trades, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell lays out a scenario in which the Redskins are able to offload Williams for a handful of assets to the Minnesota Vikings in a three-team trade, though they would not receive a second-round pick in return — something the Redskins have reportedly been adamant about this offseason. Here is what the full trade would hypothetically look like between the Redskins, Vikings, and Los Angeles Chargers:

Vikings get: 2-37, CB Desmond King, 2021 fourth-round pick (from LAC), OT Trent Williams (from WSH)
Washington gets: 4-132, OT Riley Reiff (from MIN), 4-112, 5-151 (from LAC)
Chargers get: 1-22, S Anthony Harris (from MIN)

So in giving up Williams, the Redskins would get two fourth-rounders, a fifth-rounder, and LT Riley Reiff, a veteran player with eight years of experience in the league, missing only eight games in his career. Is that enough to pry Williams away from Washington?

In my opinion, yes, it needs to be. We haven’t been made aware of any official offers that the team has had for Trent, though they reportedly have not been enough as of yet. Still, it seems unlikely that they will get a second-round pick in return. So far, this would easily be the best haul they’ve heard for him, landing them three additional mid-round picks in a valuable draft that is stacked with receiver talent and pass-catchers who can block — two things that the Redskins desperately need. It would also land them an instant fix at the LT position, with Reiff slotting into the starting lineup and shoring up the left side of the line. It also would at long last get Williams out of the building, landing him on a contending team, and allowing the Redskins to move on and start clean under Ron Rivera. Win-win.

Obviously, we aren’t aware of this trade scenario actually taking place, it’s all just hypothetical. However, if this were to hypothetically happen, the Redskins absolutely need to take it.
