On this day: Russell retires; Earl drafted; Greene waived

On this day, Boston Celtics big man luminary Bill Russell retired after 13 seasons and 11 titles.

It is also the date of the 1993 NBA Draft, held at The Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Boston took just one player of note, Iowa big man Acie Earl, with the 19th overall pick of the draft.

Earl would play for the Celtics for two seasons, in which he averaged 4.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game over 104 games played for the franchise. He would be drafted by the Toronto Raptors in the 1995 NBA Expansion draft to populate that team and the Vancouver Grizzlies.
