On the Boston Celtics parting ways with Grant Williams

With the massive cap implications of going over the second apron, should the Celtics have done so in order to retain Grant? Did they make the right choice by trading him?

As the Boston Celtics rework their roster in the NBA’s 2023 offseason, the storied ball club made the tough decision to move on from restricted free agent forward Grant Williams in exchange for a pair of second-round draft picks and a traded player exception (TPE) of about $6.2 million.

In a three-team sign and trade, the Celtics dealt the Charlotte native to the Dallas Mavericks while the San Antonio Spurs absorbed the contract of veteran wing Reggie Bullock. Williams will sign a new contract for four years and $53 million.
