The Arizona Cardinals could select an offensive tackle in the NFL draft later this month with the eighth overall pick. There are four top tackle prospects considered to be worth an early first-round pick — Louisville’s Mekhi Becton, Alabama’s Jedrick Wills, Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs and Georgia’s Andrew Thomas.
All are very confident in their abilities and all could be considered by the Cardinals.
Becton thinks any team would be smart to draft him.
“I feel I’m the most dominant tackle in this draft,” he said at the NFL combine. “You wouldn’t go wrong picking me.”
Why doe he think he is the most dominant?
“The tape shows it,” he said. “It shows that I finish almost every play. It’s as simple as that.”
Becton admits his 2018 tape was not good but feels like his play in 2019 should be enough to answer any questions.
He is the largest prospect in the draft and one of the more athletic. At the NFL combine he measured 6-foot-7 and weighed 364 pounds, yet still ran the 40-yards dash in 5.1 seconds.
He knows he will need to cut some weight. He wants to be down at about 350-355 pounds.
He does like being the biggest guy, though.
“I love being the biggest offensive lineman,” he said. “I love intimidating guys. I was always the biggest on my team.”
There might be some concerns about inexperience in true passing sets as he transitions to the NFL, but he has no preference when it comes to blocking schemes.
“It doesn’t really matter what we run as long as you’re running behind me,” he said. “I can get you a touchdown pretty much if you run behind me.”
Becton has the size, athleticism and the mentality to succeed. Could he be the next Cardinals right tackle and potentially a future left tackle?
He certainly could.
