Oklahoma was lauded for its transparency with COVID-19 testing data for the first month and half since football players returning to practice.
The Sooners then had Lincoln Riley announce the round of tests from after Oklahoma got a week off from football practice and returned to practice on Aug. 14. Testing data was released the week after from Aug. 17-21, then it has stopped.
On Tuesday, Riley announced that they will no longer be releasing testing data for football for competitive reasons.
“As far as active cases I think we’re to the point now where we’re playing games, and obviously any active case or contact trace is going to have game repercussions and so just like we would with an injury, we’re not gonna—we’ve just made the decision to not broadcast that,” he said on a zoom conference call. “I know we’ve been probably the most transparent school in the country up until then, but you don’t want to give your team a competitive disadvantage so we’re not going to do that.”
They aren’t alone in that regard, but the Sooners were as transparent as any when it came to testing data for the first month and a half. Oklahoma’s last testing update had 17 active cases from Aug. 17-21 of COVID-19 to 17 recoveries since it returned to practice. Riley has since said most of those players have recovered and rejoined the team.
Oklahoma is scheduled to kick off the 2020 season on Saturday against Missouri State at 6 p.m. CT at home.
