After landing five-star quarterbacks in the 2019 class (Spencer Rattler) and 2021 (Caleb Williams), the Oklahoma Sooners will be looking to follow the trend in 2023.
For the class of 2023, Lincoln Riley and the offensive staff have their sights set on one particular quarterback in Los Alamitos’ Malachi Nelson. The top prospect in the state of California and No. 2 quarterback in the country has been linked to Oklahoma quite a bit. In 2020, Nelson threw for over 1,500 yards with 23 touchdowns on just 115 pass attempts. He can also run a bit his game is more winning from the pocket and pushing the ball downfield.
Recent crystal ball activity has Nelson as a bona fide lock to the Oklahoma Sooners.
Provided that Riley can add yet another top quarterback to his resume, then other top prospects will flock to Norman, Oklahoma, as well. Not that Riley has had any trouble securing top talent since he took over as the head coach when legendary Bob Stoops retired.
Nelson has made it known that he will make his commitment on July 18, 2021. One year and a half before he will be eligible to sign his letter of intent to play college football.

The significance of the date for his commitment is special to Nelson according to 247Sports analyst Greg Biggins.
“That’s my parents anniversary so I thought it would be a great way to do this,” Nelson said. “My family means everything to me so I thought, what better way to announce then do it on their special day.”
The No. 2 quarterback of the 2023 class has been linked to the Oklahoma Sooners quite often since they offered him back in January. Malachi Nelson has a good relationship with the head coach that has compiled a 45-8 record with four Big 12 Championships since taking over the program.
“I have a great relationship with coach Riley and we FaceTime all the time,” Nelson said at the time. “I’m really comfortable with him, he’s a great guy and obviously a great coach and offensive mind.
“He’s someone I feel I can talk with about anything but especially football. We both love talking football and we’ll get on a zoom call and go over the offense, schemes, things like that and I really like how well I would fit in there. The quarterback tradition they have the last few years is pretty amazing. ”
Less than a month after the ChampU BBQ event in Norman, the Oklahoma Sooners might get what they are looking for with their 2023 quarterback locked in. It could be quite a busy summer for the staff with the dead period lifted.
