The Oklahoma Sooners have been active in the [autotag]transfer portal[/autotag] this offseason. They’ve added eight players to this point: seven on the offensive side of the ball and a punter to take over for Luke Elzinga.
But the Sooners aren’t done according to Brent Venables, who told the media they’re looking to add to the offensive side of the ball.
“We’ll have a few more on offense,” Venables said via The Oklahoman. “We don’t have many needs. We have tremendous retention on the defensive side of the ball.”
Oklahoma has addressed their needs well since the transfer portal opened.
The Sooners have brought in a trio of wide receivers to help replenish a depth chart that lost Nic Anderson, Jalil Farooq, Brenen Thompson, J.J. Hester, Andrel Anthony and Jaquaize Pettaway via the portal. Oklahoma hopes Javonnie Gibson, Keontez Lewis, and Isaiah Sategna can replicate or improve their 2024 production with the Sooners in 2025.
They’ve added two veteran offensive tackles, Derek Simmons and Luke Baklenko, and tight end Carson Kent.
If they are bringing in more offensive talent, a tight end or wide receiver with Power Four production in their past would make a great deal of sense.
While Venables mentioned the defensive retention, don’t rule out the Sooners bringing in a veteran defensive end to help replace the snaps played by Trace Ford, Ethan Downs and Cadien Woullard.
Oklahoma’s defensive depth chart looks like it’s in good shape even with the departures of Danny Stutsman and Billy Bowman to the NFL and a few transfer portal defections.
While the Sooners will not win any transfer portal ranking titles, they added the top player in the class, quarterback [autotag]John Mateer[/autotag], and addressed needs with experienced and productive players.
There will be more talent to pursue over the next few weeks. As the College Football Playoff plays out, more talent will become available via the transfer portal. The Sooners hope to make strategic additions in the coming weeks to add to a team looking to bounce back from a 6-6 season in 2024.
