Oklahoma is in a position it hasn’t been in a long time.
The Sooners were shocked a week ago in a 38-35 loss at home to Kansas State after turning the football over four times, getting a turnover on downs and a blocked punt. Iowa State has done it for the second-straight week as the Cyclones upset Oklahoma 37-30.
A back-and-forth game from the start, the Sooners jumped out to an early 17-6 lead. Iowa State chopped that 11-point deficit away piece-by-piece behind long drives with Breece Hall running it.
The Cyclones jumped out to a 23-20 lead after a 65-yard touchdown pass from Brock Purdy to Xavier Hutchinson on a three-play scoring drive. A holding penalty on Tre Brown in the secondary negated a three-and-out and a stop.
Oklahoma responded with a short drive that ended with a Gabe Brkic 51-yard field goal. A takeaway after a strip-sack by Isaiah Thomas and a fumble recovery on the very next possession gave Oklahoma great field position.
The Sooners would go on a four-play, 39-yard scoring drive to take a 30-23 lead capped off by Jeremiah Hall’s second receiving touchdown.
Iowa State would score 14 unanswered after a long kickoff return setup a quick scoring drive, then the Cyclones got a stop and another quick score. A Spencer Rattler interception in the end zone on Oklahoma’s final drive secured the upset for Iowa State.
The 1-2 Sooners face off in their rivalry game against Texas at 11 a.m. CT next Saturday.
