Gabe Brkic has claimed another school record.
The sophomore kicker nailed a 54-yard try during the second quarter of Saturday’s Big 12 Championship and, in doing so, officially took ownership of the longest field goal by any Sooner dating back to at least 2000. Brkic now owns five of the ten longest field goals by an OU kicker in that time period.
Brkic was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza award on December 7 and was named to the All-Big 12 first team on Thursday. The sophomore has largely continued his stellar play following one of the best freshman seasons for a kicker in school history.
He missed a 36-yard field goal earlier in the game, blowing an opportunity to put the Sooners up 10-0 in the first quarter. But he would eventually redeem himself in the form of the longest field goal in the school’s recent history. It has yet to be seen if this is the longest in school history.
According to the OU notes package from @mhouckOU the 54y FG by Gabe Brkic just now was the longest "of the 2000s" at OU. Here's the list. Brkic now has 5 of the #Sooners longest 10 longest FGs since 2000. pic.twitter.com/1Z9S61cpXs
