Official NFL transaction wire shows Browns giving up extra ’22 pick in Deshaun Watson trade

The announced trade details, by both teams, were not the official version. Instead, the Browns gave up more and got less back than the teams announced:

The Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans have both announced the trade of QB Deshaun Watson. The Texans released their announcement on Friday while the Browns waited until Sunday to make theirs. While that was interesting and different, the information of the trade was the same in both releases:

Browns receive:

  • Deshaun Watson
  • 2024 5th round pick

Texans receive:

  • 1st round picks in 2022, ’23 and ’24
  • 3rd round pick in 2023
  • 4th round pick in 2024

While both teams announced that version of the trade, the official NFL transaction wire shows something different. In the official trade, the Browns also traded their 2022 fourth-round pick, #107, and instead of receiving the Texans fifth-round pick in 2024 they will receive their sixth-round pick:

We will await word from the team on these changes. Currently, the Browns official team site still has the original trade parameters.

Instead of only one pick in 2022, Andrew Berry ended up giving up two and received one round lower in 2024. Not the biggest difference but a high fourth-round pick could have been used for a contributor in 2022.

Given the uniqueness of the trade, maybe it should be surprising that there was one more curveball thrown in at the end.
