Following a disappointing showing from the passing game during the 2019 season, the Indianapolis Colts embarked on an adventure this offseason to find a new quarterback. When it was all said and done, the smoke turned out to be fire, and Indy went with the veteran in Philip Rivers.
Despite the 38-year-old also coming off of a down year that included 20 interceptions and his second-lowest passer rating of the decade (88.5), the Colts are expecting the passing game to return somewhat to form with Rivers under center.
Oddsmakers over at BetMGM set the over/under on his 2020 passing yardage total at 4199.5 yards.
Even after a down year, this should be easy money. Literally. Rivers hasn’t gone under that total since 2012 and with the weapons the Colts have for him, the opportunity is certainly there for him to make good on this bet.
Now, there is the aspect that the Colts like to run the ball and if they are expected to be winning more, then that means the game scripts will call for fewer passing attempts. But even with a projected 10-6 record, I currently have Rivers projected for 4,301 passing yards. So take that for what you will.
The Colts offense projects to be improved after the signing of Rivers and the additions of both Michael Pittman Jr. and Jonathan Taylor in the draft. The chances of Rivers hitting the over on that passing total is the safer bet.
