No one saw this coming. Notre Dame, nearly a three-touchdown favorite at home against Marshall, lost in South Bend to its Sun Belt Conference opponent on Saturday. The final score was 26-21, but Marshall led 26-15 a few minutes earlier. The Thundering Herd thoroughly outplayed the Fighting Irish. It’s not as though the underdogs were lucky to win. They carried the play.
Fighting Irish Wire looked back at some of the key plays of this game. Here’s a comment on the interception which sealed Notre Dame’s fate late in the fourth quarter:
One too many runs for Buchner finds him on the sideline holding his left shoulder. In comes back-up Drew Pyne and on his second attempt, he throws an interception in what would virtually seal the upset for Marshall. Not how the Irish saw this one playing out at all.
Notre Dame is 0-2 and has already been eliminated from College Football Playoff consideration. Whoa.
