How high should a safety go and how high might Kyle Hamilton end up going in the 2022 NFL draft are both questions we’ve heard since the end of football season. Hamilton, the former Notre Dame All-American and collegiate standout will have his name called early in April’s NFL draft but just how early are we talking?
Earlier on Tuesday, Mel Kiper, Jr. released his updated mock draft and had Hamilton going fourth to the New York Jets.
Also on Tuesday, our colleagues at NFL Draft Wire updated their mock draft ahead of the NFL combine and had Hamilton going a little earlier at number-two overall to the Detroit Lions.
You’ll hear plenty about safeties not being worth a top-five pick, but in today’s NFL, an elite playmaker with athleticism and versatility can absolutely make enough impact to warrant one. Hamilton is absolutely that kind of defender, and wouldn’t be a shock here.
They’ve been on a bit of a kick lately of having Hamilton be the second player drafted overall but I’m still having my doubts he goes any higher than third based solely off of positional value at the safety position.
That said, the idea of the Detroit Lions potentially taking him with Michigan star Aiden Hutchinson on the board would warm plenty of Notre Dame fans’ hearts.
