Notre Dame splits double-header in opener at Wake Forest

Niko Kavadas got off to a hot start for the Irish as the first baseman homered in his first two at-bats of the season in game one.

Notre Dame’s baseball team finally got its season started on Saturday as they played a doubleheader at Wake Forest because Friday’s game was postponed.

The Irish coughed up a lead in the first game as they fell to No. 16 Wake Forest, 10-8.

Notre Dame then bounced back in game two with a 5-4 victory.

Niko Kavadas got off to a hot start for the Irish as the first baseman homered in his first two at-bats of the season in game one.  Kavadas would finish game one with five RBI which tied a career high.

Tanner Kohlhepp had a rough season debut out of the bullpen allowing a pair of hits and walks in the eighth inning.  All four batters he faced came around to score as the Demon Deacons scored five runs that inning to take the final 10-8 advantage.

In game two it was graduate-transfer left fielder Alex Brait’s grand slam in his first at-bat with the Irish to go up 4-0.  Wake Forest would chip away to tie things up at four eventually before David LaManna would score on a wild pitch to put the Irish in front 5-4, which would end up the final.

Notre Dame and Wake Forest conclude their season opening series on Sunday as first pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
