Notre Dame offseason check-in: How is USC’s rival being evaluated?

An anonymous assistant coach talked to Athlon Sports about the Notre Dame coaching staff. @IrishWireND has more.

It is annually one of the best things the good people at Athlon Sports do: They gather insights from assistant coaches on upcoming opponents. These coaches remain anonymous, in order to be free and uninhibited in offering their overall evaluations. This produces candid insights which would never be as direct if anonymity was removed.

Our friends at Fighting Irish Wire picked up what anonymous assistant coaches told Athlon about Notre Dame and its coaching situation.

Here’s what the anonymous coach said about the Fighting Irish’s staff:

“We’ll have a pretty good idea of what this head coach (Marcus Freeman) is capable of at that university by the end of the year. There’s a lot of big questions. Why was the OC search an internal promotion when it seemed like they were striking out on better names? Was it really a money issue?  Honestly, you’d hope that was it and not concerns about internal structure.”

USC certainly hopes that offensive coordinator Gerad Parker is not able to outmaneuver Alex Grinch when the Trojans go to South Bend this October.
