Notre Dame in NFL: Raiders Waive DeShone Kizer

The Las Vegas Raiders waived former Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer Tuesday and it made us remember Brian Kelly’s warning to Kizer.

DeShone Kizer went from relative unknown to the top of some NFL Draft charts after his 2015 season at Notre Dame.  2016 proved to be a rough patch for him and Notre Dame both as Kizer and the Irish went just 4-8 after a heartbreaking loss at Texas in Week One.

Kizer ultimately was drafted 52nd overall, a second round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2017.  He started 15 games for the Browns his rookie season and struggled mightily to the tune of an 0-15 record as a starter.

He was then traded from Cleveland to the Green Bay Packers where he saw action in three games in 2018, throwing two interceptions and no touchdowns.

Kizer was claimed off waivers by the Raiders in 2019 but never saw regular season action in the silver and black.  Tuesday saw the Raiders part ways with the former Notre Dame quarterback.

Kizer is only 24 and with the level of play at quarterback in the NFL I’d be surprised if he doesn’t at least pop up again in another training camp.

It probably wouldn’t have made a night and day difference in terms of his NFL career but perhaps a few of those that were so quick to jump on Brian Kelly for daring to suggest Kizer wasn’t yet ready for the NFL back in 2017.

Perhaps Kelly knew something afterall.
