No. 3 Clemson enters the title game as the defending national champs and winners of their last 29 games. Despite falling behind 16-0 to No. 2 Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl the Tigers came roaring back and winning 29-23 and advancing to the National Championship Game for the fourth time in five years, having already won it all in 2016 and 2018.
Why should a Notre Dame fan root for Clemson?
Don’t you want to be the one to end Clemson’s streak? These Tigers have won 29 straight, dating back to their national semi-final loss to Alabama on New Years Day, 2018. Should Clemson win it all they will likely be riding a 39 game winning streak when they come to South Bend on November 7 to take on what could be a top-five Notre Dame team at that point in the season.
Meeting several of their fans last December at the Cotton Bowl was an enjoyable experience even with the beat-down Notre Dame received. They were informed, pleasant to be around and generally just kind which unfortunately isn’t always the norm for sports fans whether collegiate or professional.
Why should a Notre Dame fan root against Clemson?
Does anyone actually hate Clemson football? Unlike dynasties we’ve seen they’re about as innocent as it gets. Even in winning it all multiple times recently they feel about 180-degrees from what Miami in eighties, Florida State in nineties or USC in the early 2000’s were.
The one thing I’ve found that does annoy me is that Dabo Swinney loves to make Clemson appear to be the Little Sisters of the Poor when they’re really anything but.
“Little Old Clemson!”
“No respect!”
You’ve heard it all by now if you follow college football nationally.
To me you can’t be worrying about being disrespected and claim to be “The Little Engine That Could” when you’re a football factory that spends as much on their program as Clemson annually does.
That’s my only real knock on the Clemson program.
Well, that and my colleague Danny Parkins being a fan. I’m fairly sure he could get you to root against world peace if he repeatedly told you how great it was like he does to me about Clemson football on the regular.
