Notre Dame football got its biggest win of the Marcus Freeman era, as the Irish defeated the Georgia Bulldogs 23-10 in the quarterfinals of the [autotag]College Football Playoff[/autotag].
The Sugar Bowl win moves them two wins closer to a national championship, and an impressive 12-1 record on the year. The big bowl game demons are gone as well, or at least for one night they are.
It was a fairly uneventful first quarter, with no scoring from either team. The Bulldogs got on the board first with a field goal, but the Irish answered with their own a few minutes later.
With under a minute left in the first half, Notre Dame went on a run where another field goal was made, a sack-fumble recovered at the Bulldog 13-yard line, followed by a Riley Leonard pass to Beaux Collins for a score. The burst put the Irish up 13-3 at the half.
That wasn’t it, as it carried over into the second half, as Jayden Harrison retuned the opening kickoff for a 98-yard score. The Bulldogs would make it a game with their only touchdown of the game a few minutes later, but that was the last points they’d score.
Another field goal would see the final at 23-10, the Irish advancing in the CFP.
The Irish already know their opponent, Penn State, as they will take on the Nittany Lions on Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. ET in the Capital One Orange Bowl.
