Notre Dame Baseball Beats UIW 12-1, Improves to 3-1 on Season

Notre Dame baseball defeats Incarnate Word 12-1 to improve to 3-1 on season.

It was worth the wait for the Irish baseball team as their Thursday game was rained out, but they brought the bats early and often last night scoring twelve runs and saving the bullpen for today’s double-header. Once again it was starter Tommy Sheehan getting the job done, going 6 strong innings with allowing just one run while getting the win against Incarnate Word. Reliever Dominic Cancellieri finished off the game with three stellar innings of his own, allowing just two hits and striking out 4.

The offense got on the board early and often as 2B Jared Miller doubled in two runs in the bottom of the first, then CF Spencer Myers RBI single added another for a 3-0 lead after just an inning and a half. Sloppy defense by Incarnate Word would aid in the fourth run as RF Brooks Coetzee would score on an error and a 4-0 advantage to the Irish after 4. Coetzee would strike again, this time a 2 RBI double in the 5th to stretch the lead to 6-0 through 5. Sheehan would give up his only run of the game in the top of the 6th but the Irish offense would get the runs back on an RBI single by DH Carter Putz and a RBI Sac-Fly by 3B Niko Kavadas.

The 7th inning was prosperous for the Jarrett Link’s club as they would add a run on PH John Arndorfer’s double then the biggest blow of the game came via a 3-Run Homer off the bat of another PH Eric Gilgenbach. That would conclude the scoring as the Irish defeated Incarnate Word 12-1 improving their record to 3-1 early on this season.

The Irish are back on the field for two games today, their first beginning at 4pm EST against Toledo and the night cap against University of Texas-San Antonio to finish off the Alamo Irish Classic in San Antonio, Texas.
