On the same night that Notre Dame officially hired Marcus Freeman as their new defensive coordinator, the Irish have also lost a defensive position coach.

Terry Joseph joined Notre Dame’s coaching staff in 2018 as defensive backs coach before being promoted to the defensive pass game coordinator.

Joseph is now on his way to the University of Texas where he will be a part of Steve Sarkisian’s first staff with the Longhorns, according to a report from FootballScoop.com.

The loss isn’t just of an assistant who knows how to develop talent but also that of one of Notre Dame’s best recruiters on staff.

According to Pete Sampson of The Athletic, the move is hardly a surprise to those closest to the Notre Dame program as Joseph had already begun to tell players and their parents about his move to Austin.

The loss is certainly significant as Joseph was a name some wanted to be promoted to the open defensive coordinator position that Freeman ultimately filled.

Prior to Notre Dame, Joseph had career stops on the coaching staffs of Tennessee, Nebraska, Texas A&M, and North Carolina.
